I used to be a member of the YHA and spent most weekends at a hostel. How cosy it was in the winter with a big open fire in the sitting room and somebody playing a guitar and singing. Last year my husband (80 next year)and I decided to join the Youth hostels association again for a year. We spent a couple of nights in Germany who have excellent hostels and also a few nights in England. How the hostels have changed. At one hostel we were even waited on at breakfast table. No chores to do afterwards either and our beds were also made up at one hostel. At Bristol youth hostel they even have a lift!
