Having finally admitted defeat on trying to find an ancestor without asking for help we finally decided to put a letter in the relevant local paper. Replies have been dropping through the letterbox like crazy (sorry Mr Postie). It's only been a few days and already we have 2 definite leads and found two relatives. The rest of the post has been filling us in on the history of the area which was named after our ancestor. So if you're up against that brick wall try writing to local papers - it's certainly worked for us.
