John Report 10 Dec 2011 00:17

For Patchem
Yes. When I knew her she was probably around late 50s or early 60s but being a callow teenager she just appeared to me to be old. I also remember that she left the firm where we worked after I had been there for a couple of years.
I have just found in the 1901 census a family called Walters from Woking Surrey who had two children William aged 6 and Emily aged 5. I am now starting to wonder if this was my Emily. I have a feeling that she may have had a brother.
So they were not the children of my grandfather after all but of some other previously unsuspected branch of the Walters family.
Research continues!
Thanks again to all who have been helping me :-)

Oh dear! I am being curmudgeonly in not using the Board correctly and replying by using the "Send Message" button rather than the "Add your reply" box at the end of the the thread.
Apologies to all.
I am very grateful that skilled researchers like yourselves are interested in helping me.
Whilst it is true that I had much of the information you turned up I did not know that my grandfather had an older sister called Lucy, nor did the details revealed by the 1911 census.
Incidentally, my grandfather's father, also confusingly called William, died before he was born, so my great grandmother Lucy was left with a very small child and one yet to be born. Not easy.

Until John provides some answers, there's no way of knowing.

As William was a serving soldier, he could have married and sired offspring overseas. I certainly haven't been able to find him in 1891.

John's PM to me was , as I said, lengthy, but it contained nothing which was in any way helpful.

patchem

patchem Report 9 Dec 2011 17:55

Does that mean that Emily was born between 1881 and 1901?

Yes, Cynthia, I've had a very lengthy PM, to which I responded with advice about posting replies on here...............

Perhaps he'll answer our questions when he finds his way back here again.........

This may be a red herring, as there were no penalties for not registering births until 1875, and 'your' William's birth may simply not have been registered.

We need you to answer the questions posed.........

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 9 Dec 2011 09:13

I let John know about his replies to both this and his thread on Find Ancestors (Ann Walters).

He has replied to me but I don't think he has been able to find his way back - he is in Australia but I have assured him that there are always people around 24.7. :-D

John, if you get back here........as well as replying to the queries, it would be worthwhile taking jax's advice and putting the names you are researching into the Search trees box above.

You have William down as being born in Guildford - there are 4 or 5 other members who have the same person in their trees. You can contact them for further information.

To find marriage(s). look at the following site

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Who were his parents?

Where was he born?

When did you work with Emily?

Was she single? How old would she have been?

patchem

patchem Report 7 Dec 2011 08:28

If you get his wedding certificate it will have his Father's name on it, which will help in finding him in the censuses, and possibly directly show his first family.
Do you know when his second marriage took place - when was your Father born?
Thanks
