Yes - one of them at least, unable to say for sure as they all seem to have intermingled at one time or another...sorry cannot be more specific..

Rebecca Report 4 Feb 2013 10:54

Hm... so are they Russian, Polish or Lithuanian then? :-S :-S

Thanks Margee, appreciate the information...

Very similar with Lithuania. For a time there was a Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth but neighbouring countries systematically dismantled it. most of Lithuania going to Russia. Lithuania also declared independance in 1918.

Thanks for the info Margee, I have just looked at the Carp tree on Ancestry where it states Moses Ecker/Eker was born in Lithuania and was married to Sarah Rosen.. where is Lithuania in the Russia/Poland/Austria/Prussia tangle???

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Feb 2013 18:07

Poland ceased to exist in 1795, becoming partioned off to Russia, Prussia & Austria. Poland regained its independance in 1918. Hence immigrants from Poland might say they're from Russia, Prussia or even Austria.

I think it may be Moses and it is the same family as the 1911 census. Quite why they would say Poland on one census and Russia on a later census, I do not know. It is possible it was politically better earlier to be Polish or politically better later to be Russian.. Can anyone be more informative on the pollitical situation for Polish/Russian migrants... Or could the ennumerator on the earlier census have just guessed at their nationality if they didn't speak much/any English???

Thanks guys, jax, I have tried but only a few have replied to the tree viewing request. Margee, yes that's her and trailertrash, yes that des seem rather co-incidental given Millie, Rachel and Esther were all Beatrice's sisters. Also, Sarah was their mother so maybe 'Harris with an M' is Moses their father? Not sure who Elek is though, I'll have a look when I get the chance. Also, I think Esther did marry Solomon Carp because I have found a man called Gary Carp who in his family tree has that information. Thank you guys, I'll keep searching :-D

I agree with trailertrash that the first name on that 91 census is not Harris and it definitely starts with an M. He is a Hebrew teacher and the Hebrew word for that is "Moreh". Could that be what it is but spelled wrong?

looks like Esther married Solomon Carp 1906 prestwich. seems to have had a at least 8 probably more children.. do you need any help with identifying marriages and offspring?? You can look this all up on this site.

Looking at the image for the 1891 census, I do not think Harris is correct. The first letter looks like an M to me.. can anyone else have a look....

Does this not seem rather co-incidental???

1891 Hull Yorks
Eker family

Harris 1855 poland hebrew teacher
Sarah 1867 poland
Esther 1885 poland
Elek 1886 poland
Rachel 1889 london
Millie 1891 hull

On the 1901 census the 2 older children Esther, 16 and Abraham, 15 were born Russia. Next child Rachel, 11 was born London so evidentally they emigrated 1886-1890.

Hi Rebecca

Have you looked to see if anyone has this family in their tree?

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 2 Feb 2013 16:15

Hi, I am looking for some living descendants of the Russian Eker/Ecker/Ekersoff/Eckersoff family. My Great Gran Beatrice Eker was born in England in 1908 but I am not sure when her parents moved to England.

Thank You,
Rebecca
