Is the marriage that you are proposing the one in Andover in 1978?
Andover is a long way from Ash, even if both Andover and Aldershot are in Hampshire I think that if you have been living in Ash you would not marry in Andover district, unless you know that she moved there.

However, there is a birth for a Sheila M Thompson in Kingsclere in 1955, and this, to me, looks like a far more likely candidate for that Andover marriage.

I want to most sincerely thank those of you (via public and private messages) have so quickly and (I believe) so accurately found information I have wanted for many years.
I am both extremely impressed with your skills and deeply endebted to you.
To think that I only put the information up yesterday on a whim, without any expectation of a result!
I shall have to verify this, of course, but it is looking very promising.
Thank goodness also, that I come from a long line of very brave people (particularly the women) and can never be intimidated by a bully!!! To think that had it been possible, I would have lost the value and meaning of this entire site.

and Reggie's was not restored .............

.......... even though it was NOT a bullying message!

Just pointing out the very important fact that posting certain information (DOB) was doing exactly what Paula did not want to happen ....................... posting on the world wide internet a means of probable identification of the person.

I think Reggie has been most unfairly accused, in this instance, of bullying.

I contacted GR..............

They have just replied

Dear Reggie,

Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

This posting seems to have been removed in error. We do apologise.

Kind Regards,

Paula

I have just heard from one of you fabulous researchers and it seems likely that this 'Sheila M.' is not the correct one. On the address given, via electoral roll, her age range is given as 55-59, and she is now 67 and they are not usually so wrong. Back to the drawing board.
I have this morning been given information about the cemetery/memorial in London where a uncle is commemorated in WW11. The family did not know this, so are very grateful.
I have praised you all to Genes Reunitedn and again, thank you so very much.

Paula

any age, or even name, given to any official agency can be right or wrong!

The woman found for you might or might not be the correct person ................... depending on whether she stretched the truth, whether another person gave the information to the Electoral Roll officials and knew her correct age or not, whether she led everyone to believe she was 10 years younger than she really was and then carried that stretching of the truth through to officialdom, etc etc

Many women and men lie about their ages to spouses and children .... hence wrong ages and possible birth dates given on death certificates

They usually keep the same date and month, but change the year

My own grandfather told everyone that he was born on Dec 25 1886. After he died, his son discovered a birth certificate hidden in a drawer ................ grandfather was born Jan 9 1885. A fiction maintained for over 70 years!

That's what makes it fun when trying to find documents!

I never, ever, dismiss someone just because the age is "wrong".

Follow it through yourself

Never simply trust any one of us .............

........... none of us is not infallible, no matter what any one person tells you!

ALL information provided by any of us should be followed up by yourself ....... by buying certificates, writing to that Sheila to see if she is "yours", etc etc

Jut being in the US is no bar to that ...................... I'm in Canada and can trace from here so I'm certain that you can.

Reggie

I am so pleased to hear that GR agreed the removal of your post was in error, even though it has not been restored.

I saw it, and you were not rude.

maybe you will get apologies from a couple of people now?? ;-)

Still thinking of ways to find this person - the middle name was Margaret, but as usually only an initial is mentioned, that is not much help.
Always hard to find women as, more often than not, they marry and it would be an immense task to go through some 20 odd years in which a marriage is likely to have taken place.

patchem

patchem Report 7 Apr 2013 00:47

The problem with women is that they do not marry but 'take' the man's surname without a marriage occurring.
There are no marriages showing in the area of the country proposed.
How much money do you want to spend on wrong certificates?
