I am trying to find living descendants of William James Fowler - a policeman who was last heard of in Arbour Square Stepney on the 1911 census. He was a son of bricklayer James WIlliam Fowler. He seems to have vanished into thin air after that so I am wondering if there is any way of tracing where he went and if he stayed married to Emily. If only we could see the 1921 census!!! Tree searches have not thrown up anything. Any ideas please? :-(

So, William James Fowler died in Beckenham Kent in March 1956 and I have just seen his Probate record and even though he has a living wife, and possibly a living son and a living daughter - the solicitor inherits. So I presume he left a will cutting them out. What a mystery!!

Thanks all - any further theories welcome!

It doesn't mean the solicitor inherited . it means he appointed the solicitor to be the executor who applied for probate so he could distribute the assets according to the will .

You can apply for a copy of the will to

The Probate Department of the Principal
Registry of the Family Division
First Avenue House, 42 - 49 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6NP
Tel: +44 (0)20 7947 6939

found by googling
When someone dies, you may be able to apply for a ‘grant of representation’. This gives you the legal right to deal with the person’s property, money and possessions (their ‘estate’). The right to deal with the estate of someone who’s died is called ‘probate’.

You can apply yourself or use a solicitor.

Most cases follow the same basic process.

Check if there’s a will - this normally states who sorts out the estate; if there’s no will the next of kin can apply.
Apply to get a ‘grant of representation’ - this gives you the legal right to access things like the person’s bank account.
Pay Inheritance Tax - this is only paid if the estate’s worth over £325,000 and is part of applying for a grant of representation - once you’ve paid any tax due, you can collect the assets.
Collect the assets - eg money from the sale of the person’s property.
Pay any debts - eg unpaid utilities bills.
Distribute the estate - this means giving any property, money or possessions to the people entitled to it (‘beneficiaries’).
