Thank you so much for all the information. I am sure I can now make good progress and perhaps make contact. It certainly does seem to be the Bettwsy I am looking for.

Dealing with SA archives can be a bit of a tangle; it all depends on which one you need. I have had one site mail me copies of a document free of charge, and another tell me that I need to hire a local researcher to get copies.

You have depots TAB and SAB there. ... I cannot remember from one time to the next how to find contact info at that site ...

http://www.national.archives.gov.za/aboutnasa.html
then Contact us electronically
http://www.national.archives.gov.za/aboutnasa.html
then Acronyms and Names Used to Identify Archival Repositories (Depots) and Contact Details.
http://www.national.archives.gov.za/aboutnasa.html

in case you have to go looking for it again, that is the trail to follow.

SAB:
National Archives Repository (Public Records of Central Government since 1910)
Postal address: Private Bag X236, PRETORIA 0001
Street address: 24 Hamilton Street, Arcadia, PRETORIA.
Tel: (012) 441 3200. Fax: (012) 323 5287.
Email: [email protected]

TAB
National Archives Repository (Records of the former Transvaal Province and its predecessors as well as of magistrates and local authorities)
Postal address: Private Bag X236, PRETORIA 0001.
Street address: 24 Hamilton Street, Arcadia, PRETORIA.
Tel: (012) 441 3200. Fax: (012) 323 5287
Email: [email protected]

right, same contact details anyway

if you email them they will tell you how to proceed, and that site has a list of recommended researchers as well

good luck :-D

Many thanks for the valuable information in the South African National Archives. As I am in the UK will I have to find a researcher to obtain copies of these files?

there are a couple of references to that name in documents in the South African National Archives

select 'All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records'

you can obtain copies of documents from the SA archives, and possibly one of those would tell you something you could use to look further

Put 'South Africa' in your title

Look for the names etc in 'search all member trees' - under the 'search' button

Put your tree on here, so that it can be picked up by anyone else researching the names - taking care, of course, not to include details of anyone who may be living

I am searching for living children and/or grandchildren of Charles Edward Benson born 1908 in Arkesden, Essex. He emigrated to South Africa in 1930, destination port Cape and eventually became a mining engineer. His wife's name was Dorothy G. They had two daughters I know of - Bettswy born 1938 and Rosemary J. born in 1939 in South Africa. Charles made visits back to England until 1948. Dorothy visited here with her daughter Rosemary in 1956. The two sisters Bettswy and Rosemary visited England in 1958. Researching on behalf of my husband, the nephew of Charles Edward Benson
