Marie - may we introduce you to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ ?? Admittedly you may be an experienced researcher and already have or know how to order certificates.

Each cert costs £9.25, all major credit and debit cards accepted, with free world wide P&P included in the price.

Although your post on 'this' board is intended on to find living relatives, there does seem to be some discrepancies on what you've been told and what the records indicate.

Once you have the correct dob, you might like to consider purchasing his military records which are still (I believe) with the MOD. They are definitely not in the Public Domain. There has been some suggestion that the Guards keep their own records, advise to be corrected?

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

The post on the link given by Reggie indicates that you were one of the heirs to an Intestate Estate. If you still have the researcher's contact details, may be you could ask them for copies of the various BMD certificates they would have had to supply to the Treasury?

Have you 'slipped' the Death events for your father, or was he adopted by the Darvells?

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007 about George Stanley Darvell
Name: George Stanley Darvell
Birth Date: 10 Apr 1930
Date of Registration: Mar 1975
Age at Death: 44
Registration district: Kingsbridge
Inferred County: Devon
Volume: 21
Page: 1487

England & Wales, Birth Index, 1916-2005 about George S Darvell
Name: George S Darvell
Mother's Maiden Surname: Batchelor
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1927
Registration district: Watford
Inferred County: Oxfordshire - should be Hertfordshire?
Volume Number: 3a
Page Number: 1338

Can't seem to spot a 1930 birth anywhere.

Assuming the 1927 birth is correct, if Florence wasn't married the entry would have read George S Batchelor, mms Batchelor.

Who does he name as his father on (presumably his) 1948 marriage to your mother?

To clarify one point - if your grandparents married before your father was born, technically he wasn't illegitimate even if he was conceived before the marriage.
Many of us have similar tales relating to our families.

Even if his biological father wasn't Stanley, it was assumed that as Florence was married , her husband was the father. This assumption occurs even if the legitimate husband had been dead for 5 years and the biological father didn't attend the Reg office.

The posting of the marriage in 1927 is correct (between Florence and George Stanley)- my father was illegitimate as he was born the same year one month after they were married. PRICKLES: I would love the information. Thank you. :-)

Post here for suggestion for coverage of the local newspapers

http://www.cheshampeople.co.uk/

They might even know of parish magazines who would carry your request, or ask a local shop/post office to advertise in their window or even local Pub Landlords

Maria,

I do not think that anyone who reads your message will know your Father.

Perhaps you should put a letter in the local newspaper?

Anyone in Chesham who knew my father George Stanley Darvell born 1927 died 1973 in a drowning incident. Married Mary Teresa Stanton. Had two children Maria Darvell 1951 and Karen Darvell 1953 - coming to Chesham this year to look around. Presently live in Florida. :-)
