actually Brigette if what you are wanting to do is contact your father's family,

it would probably be better to do that, rather than to talk about them on the internet :-)

(you never know when he or one of his family members might google the names too, and find this thread, and how they might feel about it ... his parents' circumstances when they married being somewhat recent personal info, for instance ... personally I wouldn't want to see someone talking about my 'illegitimate' mother if I googled my family's names) (and I would never talk about someone that way, in an online tree, who was not a direct ancestor of mine, either! ... but of course I've never felt the need to refer to any person as 'illegitimate' ...)

you can find Derek's mother's surname by finding his birth here

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

(although of course you know it now from the info PricklyHolly sent you privately)

and if you search there for births with that surname combination you'll see he was the only child (there was another marriage with the same surnames) so unfortunately you can't make contact through a brother or sister which would sometimes be an idea to consider

here's the big thing though

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/tree/results/hankins/derek?memberkey=0&yearofbirth=1938&yearofbirthrange=2

Derek appears to have two trees here at GenesReunited with his name in them, and several other people have him in their trees

if all else fails, you could work out what those people's relationship is with him and contact one of them perhaps

Mother's Maiden Surname:Allen
Date of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar 1916
Registration district:Bath
Inferred County:Somerset
Volume Number:5c

According to information on Ancestry, Amy Blanch Hankins nee Allen died 5th Jan 2011 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Looking at Amy's birth.......mothers maiden name Allen.......it might be that Amy was illegitimate and "Wagg" was the name she took from a stepfather.

Spouse Surname: Allen Or Wagg, Amy B
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1937
Registration district: Southampton

This would indicate that Amy B Allen had been married before?

I am not seeing an earlier marriage, so it might be that it didn't take place in England or Wales.

Wow fast response, thanks so much!

Yep Ive done that, it does give an address but I dont really want to appear like a stalker, lol, and contact that address directly. I thought it might be best to ask here if anyone knew anything about the family, as I googled the name and it brought me here, I can see there are a few Hankins posting here so thought I would gain more info by posting here.

Id like any general info at all, however small, just to know a bit about my background really. :-)
