MARKED AS ANSWERED IN ERROR, MORE INFO GREATLY APRECIATED. THANKS Looking to find out any information about my grandmother and her family that could help solve a few questions regarding my dads childhood.
He was born in a workhouse in Shepton Mallet to an unmarried mother Ellen Mabel in 1928. He never knew his mother so I am trying to find out where he spent his childhood, he would never speak about it. His mother married Albert Perrett in 1933. Hope there is someone who is connected to either of these 2 families that may be able to help me fill in the gaps.

If he never knew his mum it's likely he was in a children's home

You could try Barnados to see if he was one of their children

If his mum didn't take him out of the home then it's likely she didn't tell her new family anything about him

Have you looked for any children for her and Mr perrett

Looks like they had 4 children from 1933

They show on FreeBMD

You could try to follow them up. Plus look on search trees on here to see if anyone has them in their tree

I have his whereabouts for part of his childhood (not Barnados) from birth to nearly 2 (with his grandma/granddad) and then nothing until he was about 7 years old.

His mothers new family (Perrett) knew nothing about him.

My only hope of finding anything I think is from his mothers birth family, perhaps stories have been passed down the family.

So we cross posted

Have you got his mums birth cert?

Have you located her family on any census. To see if she had siblings

You need to give us her info as we can't tell from just her name

Sorry I'm not sure how to use this system properly, only just started. What is a PM and how do I amend the heading as per your suggestion?

As for his mum, Ellen Mabel Cannings

Born 17/6/1910, Father Tom Cannings, mother Annie (nee Hewlett)

Yes have found her on only 1 census listing 1911, she had many brothers and sisters (all now dead)

So have you tried to follow up on her siblings families.

Often within a family especially when the child was kept Family info / stories get handed down . Sometimes they have been embellished but have a grain of truth in them

Posting the 1911 so we can see the family

Lottie, victor and Frank, were their children too, with another Reginald born Oct 1924

All the children are now dead. I have managed to track down a couple of their kids and spoken with them. They do not know anything about my dad and they have not kept in contact with aunts/uncles/cousins etc, so could not give me any details. I have hit a brick wall with tracing any more without investing a lot of cash in obtaining certificates etc for proof. Difficul when names are quite common and prolific in the area you are looking

Although I cannot see any immediate link I am curious about your family because the oldest ancestor I have in my tree is a John Canning who married Ann Hewlett in Gloucester in late C18th & lived in Frampton on Severn. Are you aware of any family connection with these people or Canning in Bristol please? Julie
