Hi, thanks for the latest post.

To be honest I had not explored the possibility of Emily rather than amelia, so that is something that I am now looking in to so thank you for that! Its really Helpful.

I definitely don't think she was married although she has put on Amy's birth certificate that her "maiden name was johnson" (had this passed on to me from a relative) I think she just took on the married name

I think the 1871 census post (by AnnCardiff) is definitely her, although its a shame she is listed as a visitor so didn't take me much further. Although I have noted the names of the people she was visiting to see if these were related somehow. But as you say it strange that someone with a similar name and age was listed again on the 1871 census. Is this a usual occurrence?

I have looked up the death (listed by Ann) and think again this is her, I can't find her death under WestMidlandsBMD to see if she was buried (unsure if cremation was an option then??) However I am visiting the local family history archives at the weekend so hoping I can find where she was laid to rest (if buried) to see if that can give me any further insight.

Thanks again and will definitely keep you posted and ask further questions if they arise!

Really appreciate the contact x

hi Amie, it's hard to tell what you found helpful, did anything get solved? :-)

It is quite possible that her birth was registered as Emily, especially given the 1871 census malyon posted (twice! - delete the duplicate for easier reading, malyon?) ... names like these were commonly treated as interchangeable

there then might be two possible births

Births Jun 1861
JOHNSON Emily W Bromwich 6b 656

Births Dec 1861
JOHNSON Emily W Bromwich 6b 582

and this is a possibility for her in 1881

Name: Emily Johnson
Age: 19
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relationship to Head: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England
Civil Parish: Handsworth
County/Island: Staffordshire
Country: England
Street address: 112 Soho Hill
Occupation: General Servant
Registration district: West Bromwich

registering the children in the father's surname didn't necessarily mean they were married ... I have a pair of ancestors who married at 45, several years after the last of their several children were born :-)

given William's age in particular, he might have been already married

... although actually the 1891 census shows him born c1861?

Hello, I am trying to find out some further information about a lady called Amelia Johnson who would of been my 2x great grandmother however I have come to brick wall and can't find anything about her at all.

So what I know, she was born in West Bromwich abt 1862, had 3 daughters with William Slater born 1855 in Wednesbury, Amy (born 4th January 1897) Beatrice (Born 1891) and Sarah (Born 1888) - (Their could of been more children that I have not yet found out about)
I have Amys birth certificate which shows that her mother Amelia Slater was formerly Johnson (which I presumed would evidence that William and Amelia were married)
However I can only find the 1891 census which shows Amelia and William living with their two earliest children Sarah and Amy. I have searched for marriage certificates for William Slater and Amelia Johnson with no avail and also looked for an Amelia Johnson on the birth register of 1862 +\- 2years and can't find anything, which makes me believe her first name was not Amelia and she adopted her middle name.
I have looked at the address which her child Amy was living at before she got married on the electoral roll (78 Piercy Street wednesbury) to see if she was at home with her parents to find out some further info, however she seemed to have been lodging with a friend or family member Ada Blackham.
I have found many William Slaters born 1855-1857 in Wednesbury one of which had the same occupation as a gas fitting maker/ iron tube fittings maker but further research led to me finding he had married someone called Emily Brothers so crossed this off my list. (they were living as husband and wife in the 1911 census)
On their other daughter Beatrice's baptism records it also shows her mother listed as Amelia . And I found that Sarah was living as a servant at the age of 13, and Amy living elsewhere at 14 as a servant. Was unsure if that would help with my search.

I have no idea what to search next to find out who Amelia Slater (nee Johnson) really was.

I was wondering has anyone else got her in their family tree or have you been in a similar position, if so would you be willing to give me some tips please on how I can break down this brick wall?

Any comments would be really appreciated!

Thank you x
