Looking for any one of the decendants of a Wray/ Steel family from around the Grimsby area.

patchem Report 16 Apr 2017 17:27

There is this marriage in Grimsby

Marriages Dec 1914
Steel Harry Wray Grimsby 7a 1484
Wray Mabel H Steel Grimsby 7a 1484

is this the family that you are interested in?

Hello and welcome to the boards.

Please always give all the information you have (without breaching privacy of living people) if you would like other members to help you. There is just no point in us knowing *less* than you know.

(If you are hoping that descendants will see your message, the odds are slim to nil -- but they are better if you put names and dates in your post, since then someone doing an internet search might find your post.)

If that is the marriage in question, you can find the births of their children here

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

by searching with the two surnames, if you don't know them already.

There is actually only one apparent birth to the couple:

Births Dec 1916
Steel Cyril - Wray - Grimsby 7a 998

unless they relocated; there are two births after that, in Bootle and Mutford, but might belong to a marriage in Hammersmith.

Have you searched family trees at this site for the names of the people you are interested in?

(deleted suggested death of Cyril as I had confused him with a Cyril born 1914 Goole)

(deleted suggested info about marriage for Cyril and death of wife, same reason)

patchem

patchem Report 16 Apr 2017 20:09

JoonieCloonie,

That death for Cyril is 2 years out. There are other births in Yorkshire in 1914 that could be the Goole death.

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Apr 2017 21:55

oops. Needed more coffee!

And the marriage too.

I'll edit them out to avoid confusion.

Births Sep 1892 ?
Wray Mabel Henrietta Caistor 7a 671

Did the family emigrate, I wonder?

I don't see a likely death for Mabel, for example. Or Mabel or Cyril in the 1939 register.

Mabel is in a tree at Ancestry

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/31528596/person/320058542642/facts

but no info beyond her marriage.

Also in two trees at this site, so Colley you will want to contact those tree owners if you don't know them already.

One of them also has Harry Steel 1890 but no place of birth (same as in the Ancestry tree).

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Apr 2017 22:49

Here they are in 1939 - I had been checking under the variant spelling in all searches anyway as the change is very common

Mabel H Frary (Steele) 1892 Grimsby R.D. Lincolnshire (Parts of Lindsey)
Harry Steele 1890 Grimsby R.D.

This suggests that Mabel remarried but I think that must be wrong; that marriage is in 1979 (Ancestry mistranscribes the husband as Grary) and there is no death to match the surname, and Mabel would surely be deceased by 2007, if not by 1979.

Well ... it's possible. Mabel H Frary was on the 2002-2003 electoral roll in Grimsby possibly in a residential facility.

Name: William Frary
Birth Date: 28 Nov 1898
Age at Death: 83 (died 1982)
Registration district: Grimsby
Inferred County: Humberside
Volume: 7
Page: 0554

Births Mar 1899
Frary William Hull 9d 282

Name: Harry Steele
Birth Date: 26 Apr 1890
Age at Death: 83 (died in 1974)
Registration district: Grimsby
Inferred County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 3b
Page: 730

Births Jun 1890
Steel Harry Bootle 10b 680

so possibly the Steel-Wray birth in Bootle was their child?

Births Sep 1918
Steel Marjorie - Wray - Bootle 10b 1242

Name: Marjorie Lambert
Birth Date: 27 Jul 1918
Date of Registration: Apr 2001
Age at Death: 82
Registration district: North Lincolnshire
Inferred County: Lincolnshire
Register Number: A49B
District and Subdistrict: 5541A
Entry Number: 24

Someone who has Mabel Wray 1892 in their tree here has the same surname.

and possibly the Steel-Wray birth in 1920 in Mutford? (probably not; probably married in Ipswich)

Thought this might be Mabel's death (though looks like Mabel M in index)
Mabel M Steel
Birth Date: abt 1892
Date of Registration: Mar 1969
Age at Death: 77
Registration district: Oakham Inferred County: Rutland
Volume: 3c Page: 689

I was editing :-)

I think Mabel actually did remarry at a very advanced age ...

Why Ancestry had steadfastly refused to give me this search result before, I don't know.

I wonder whether Colley knew all this ...............

I will send a PM.

Brilliant. 40720 days - hope they have worked out their leap years correctly.

We might have completely the wrong Wray/Steel family.

I relied on your Wray-Steel fu, patchem :-D

I would think you got it right, unless there is some more obscure Wray-Steel connection.

Great pic there.
