Hi,

I have been looking at a property for years. I don't know why but the mansion itself just interests me so much. It was up for sale some time ago and I think it has now been sold so I don't know who I'd contact really, to stay updated with what they do with it! Is there anyway I could find out who bought it?

Or would anyone know how lived there previously? The history of the lady who owned the house? She kept her husbands ashes in the property and they were still there after she left. Its just such an interesting house, I love it. I wish it could be easier to find the history and current updates. I'm so eager to know what the new owners do next!

Thank you :)

‘Google’ it.

Have a look into the local records office - they often have manorial records.

Try writing to ‘The Occupiers’.

Looks like it was up for sale with Bannermanburke Properties Ltd.

I'd follow the advice already given to write a letter to "The Occupier" at the address and just tell them you have followed the house and it's sale with interest.

If you have a few spare millions then it could be an absolutely wonderful place. 11 bedrooms. Glad I don't have to clean the place :-D

Perhaps the Borders Family History Society could help??

The Palmer-Douglas family lived there from the 1950s until 1975, having downsized from 64-roomed Cavers House;

". . . James [Palmer-Douglas ] moved his family to nearby Midgard in the early 1950s and had the roof at Cavers House removed to save on tax.. . . . "

In 1975 they moved to Caithness.

He died in 2013;

PALMER-DOUGLAS
JAMES MALCOLM
90
KIRKTON
2013
823/ 67
Hawick

He married in 1946. His wife may be still living. At least I don't see her death.

History of the Douglases of Cavers - but only up to James's generation.
His brother Archibald was "of Midgard" in 1976 - which doesn't make sense, as he died in 1947:
http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/families/douglas_of_cavers.htm

Archibald's death:

DOUGLAS
ARCHIBALD PALME[R]
66
1947
785/2 2
Kirkton (Roxburgh)

Apparently he died at Midgard.

The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh has lots of documents, etc re the Douglases of Caver.

Not that any of that helps with whoever was at Midgard after 1975 - if anyone.

Patrick Murray bought the last acres of Cavers Estate in 1975 (see the tinyurl link above) - but I don't know if he bought Midgard or not - maybe only the Cavers land.

From Google searching -
The author of the tinyurl article was Alistair M Redpath, who has a Twitter account @ officialAliRed

Maybe he could tell you more about Midgard.
