Hi,

World War I:

Start: 28 July 1914; with the Austro-Hungarian declaration of war on Serbia. Germany, France, Russia, and the British Empire all followed over the next few days.
End: 11 November 1918; with the signing of the Armistice by Germany.
28th June 1919 The Treaty of Versailles officially ends World War 1.

Think we declared war on Germany 4th August 1914, if I'm wrong I'm sure it will be corrected. :-D

You are right BMD!

If anyone has a Kindle or other e-reader then a useful little book is "World War One: History in an Hour" by Rupert Colley. It costs 99p.

It gives all the key points and events and is very good if you don't want to get bogged down in too much detail (you can always research further any points of interest).

Many old soldiers refererred to it as the 1914-1919 war as many were not discharged until after October 1919.

My grandfather was in Turkey and did not come home until that time.
