Battle of The Little Big Horn

It is believed that one of my husband's ancestors died with General Custer at the battle of The Little Big Horn. Is there any way of finding if this is true?

Do the dates add up? Were your husband's ancestors in America in 1876? Not sure really how you can prove it unless the family has some evidence.
