If you google the King's own Scottish Borderers or even kosb, you will probably find some leads on the Regiment

If you give us some details for your granddad, we might be able to see if we can find any records for him.

There is this WWI medal index card:

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

Name: Alexander McNaught
Regiment or Corps: Kings Own Scottish Borderers
Regimental Number: 9708

It gives a regimental number which might be useful.

He was entitled to the British medal, the Victory medal, and the '14 Star

As you said, the 1911 census shows his regiment was in India, and at that time Alexander was serving with the Ist Battalion, and that he was a married man.

1911 England Census

Name: Alexander McNaught
Age in 1911: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887
Birth Place: Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
County/Island: Military
Country: England
