Hello.

I wonder if anyone could help me with information about George Barry born in Merthyr Tidfil. He served in the Royal Army Supply Corps in WW2

Thank you

Agnes

Welcome to the boards Agnes.

WW2 service records are not online but are still with the MOD. This website will tell you how to go about ordering them and what you need to provide. They will cost £30 and may take several months to arrive:-

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

You don't say when he was born but this could be a possibility for his birth:-

First name(s) GEORGE
Last name BARRY
Birth year 1917
Birth quarter 4
Registration month -
Mother's last name THOMAS
District MERTHYR TYDFIL
County Glamorganshire
Country Wales
Volume 11A

do you know if he survived the war or what his service number was

If you have an exact date of birth, you might be able to find a death record for him.

Have you found him on the 1939 Register or would he have already been called up? If his name is visible, it means he died before 1991. Blanked out names mean that either they haven't yet been able to identify a death in England or Wales, or that he died in another country.

Of course, there is the possibility that he is still living!

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 11 Mar 2016 23:48

This could possibly be a death:-

First name(s) GEORGE
Last name BARRY
Gender Male
Birth day 5
Birth month 9
Birth year 1917
Age -
Death quarter 4
Death year 1971
District COLCHESTER
County Essex
Volume 4A
Page 1679

If he was born in September his birth may have been registered in October which would fit with the birth record.

Thanks Kath.

I think this is brilliant.

I had found this entry somewhere but with the death date only....no birth date. I therefore had no way of safely linking the two.

I have his birth certificate which only arrived two days ago and guess what?
George Barry was born on 5th September 1917 :-)

Have to think how to proceed now. Colchester was/is an army town was/is it not?
Thanks for your help.

Regards
Agnes

Agnes sent a PM before Kath had posted the death reg.

She asked what the 1939 Register was. Although I replied with a brief explanation, the 'official' one can be found on the National Archive site. Just click on the following link.

http://tinyurl.com/hnh82qg

On a brief glance, George doesn't seem to be on the Register. He may have already volunteered or been called up.

Agnes - if you can give us the names of his parents and their dates or year of birth, we can see if he is with them but misstranscribed

I would send for the death certificate and hope that the informant might be a relative who you could search for and who could give you more information.

Thanks Detective.

I had looked for a marriage for Teresa but didn't find any. It was a late marriage as you noticed. In David Barry's will in 1944 she is described as spinster.

Thanks too for all that work on the transcription of the Goode household.

Most of my own family history was done on Scotlands People. I find the English records more challenging to access and figure out!

No problem - George's DC may, as suggested, shed more light on his life after WW2.

At the very least it will tell you what his occupation was.

Agnes Report 13 Mar 2016 20:23

Might I ask a wee bit more help from you clever people?

George Barry's parents were David and Catherine Barry(nee Thomas) I found David and Catherine Barry in the 1911 census and they have 7 children born between 1898 and 1908

There are three Barry/Thomas children born after the census
Austin Barry 1912
Teresa Barry 1914
George Barry 1917
is there a way of knowing that these 3 children are siblings of those listed in the 1911 Census?
I've got myself confused

thanks for your help

KathleenBell Report 13 Mar 2016 23:43

You would need to check on any other Barry/Thomas marriages. This is the only other possible Barry/Thomas marriage I can see in Merthyr Tydfil:-

First name(s) THOMAS
Last name BARRY
Marriage quarter 1
Marriage year 1909
Registration month -
MarriageFinder™ THOMAS BARRY married one of these people
NORAH DONOVAN, ELIZABETH THOMAS
District MERTHYR TYDFIL
District number -
County Glamorganshire
Country Wales
Volume 11A
Page 943

Without the certificates it would be difficult to tell whether the children's births were to this couple or "your" couple.

Agnes Report 14 Mar 2016 23:07

Thanks for your reply Kath

I have George's birth certificate so I who his parents were.

By looking at the 1911 census I figured that Thomas Barry married Norah.

Rather intrigued by the fact that Teresa Barry appears in the 1939 Register at the same address as George's parents. I suppose she could have been a relative rather than a sibling
