Did he have a middle name and did he die during the war?

There is this on Findmypast:-

First name(s) JOHN JOSEPH
Last name WELFORD
Service number 26155
Rank GDSN.
Regiment Grenadier Guards
Battalion 1st Battalion.
Birth place SCALING, YORKS
Residence -
Enlistment place HINDERWELL
Death year 1917
Death day 10
Death month 10
Cause of death Died of wounds
Death place France & Flanders
Theatre of war Western European Theatre

Hinderwell is close to Roxby so thought it might be him.

EDIT - probably NOT this one as he was only 20 years old when he died.

About 70% of WW1 service records were destroyed by fire so they may not exist anymore.

You probably have him in the 1911 census:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census

Kingsley Brook Near Cheadle Staffordshire, Kingsley, Staffordshire, England

John Welford Head Married Male Farmer 38 1873 Yorkshire Rokby
Gertrude Welford Wife Married Female - 36 1875 Kingsley Staff
John Alexander Welford Son - Male - 3 1908 Kingsley Staff

Married 11 years, just the one child born to the marriage and still living at the time of the census.

There are various John Welfords in the medal indexes, but no detail to identify which, if any is your man.

The Absent Voters List for the 1918 Electoral Roll might give his Regt and Regt No.

This site might help you find the Electoral Roll:
