PatinCyprus Report 2 Jan 2017 20:06

Found his medal roll

Name: Horace James Bowler
Military Year: 1914-1920
Rank: Private
Medal Awarded: British War Medal and Victory Medal also 1914 Star

Regiment or Corps: Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment
Regimental Number: 11306

Previous Units: 11306 1st Bn. Notts & Derby R. Pte., 11306 2nd Bn. Notts & Derby R., 11306 9th Bn. Notts & Derby R

The problem is this is the medals roll not his service records. Medal rolls were kept separate to the service records, over 70% of WW1 service records were destroyed by a fire due to bombing in WW2.

I think this might be Horace James, Frances and family mistranscribed as Bower rather than Bowler, in the 1939 Register:

Bower Household (6 People) 2 Southlea Road , Carlton U.D., Nottinghamshire, England

Frances Bower 27 Mar 1896 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 66 2
Horace J Bower 11 May 1892 Male Railway Guard Married 66 1
Florence A Yeats (Bower) 12 Dec 1919 Male Tobacco Canteen Waitress Single 66 3
Frederick J Bowler 26 Aug 1912 Male Cycle Nickel Plater Single 66 4
James W Bowler 17 Nov 1923 Male Coal Miner Underground Heavy Worker Single 66 5
Ronald Bowler 23 Oct 1925 Male At School Single 66 6

It certainly looks like Bowler on the image of the register. There are 5 closed records following on from the Bowler records above.

Noticed Horace was a railway guard in the 1939 register. According to the records below, he seems to have worked for the railway more or less from the end of WWI until at least 1939.

(the 'H' of 'Hames' has been overtyped with a 'J' on the image)

Name: Horace Hames Bowler
Age: 27
Birth Date: 11 May 1892
Residence Date: 27 May 1919
Station: Colwick Sidings
Company: London and North Eastern
Description: Returns of staff at stations and depots as at 31 oct. 1939 1939-1940

He is described as a Goods Guard, and was earning £3 5s weekly on Oct 31st 1939.

The birthdate of 11 May 1892 matches that of Horace J 'Bower' in the 1939 register I posted, so pretty certain I have the right family in the 1939 register.

Looking at the image of the 1939 register, Frederick j has been mistranscribed as 26 Aug 12, when the image says 21 Aug 21.

Tallies with this birth:

Births Sep 1921 Bowler Frederick J Green Nottingham 7b 833

The others listed on the 1939 tally with:

Births Mar 1920 Bowler Florence A Green Nottingham 7b 937
Births Dec 1923 Bowler James W Green Nottingham 7b 694
Births Dec 1925 Bowler Ronald Green Nottingham 7b 686

Freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

has another 5 Bowler births with mother maiden name Green between 1927 and 1934in Nottingham (4 girls and 1 boy) who are probably the 5 closed records on the 1939 register
