It would be great if you could add the field to enter the mother's maiden name in births, which would greatly reduce time and be specific.

Thanks :-D

One can in free BMD, after 1911 I think it is.

but that would only work for births registered after 1911 because this was when that information was recorded in the indexes

If that option isn't available at this site from 1911 onward (I wouldn't know), what are people paying for??

Service inferior to what is available free at FreeBMD???

I'm hoping that Graham isn't aware that the info isn't in the index before 1911, and this site does provide the option after 1911.

I think it would be a very good idea to have a maiden name field to help trace family lines.Yes the official records from 1911 includes mother names but many of the local BMD's and parish records are now including mothers maiden names for that very reason.

Many people have a mothers name and when one goes back they find a former marriage or a child born out of wedlock taking on a stepfather name. :-D

Oh ... I'd taken the original post to be about searching records at the site, rather than about searching family trees at the site.

The latter would mean adding a field to each individual entry in a family tree for including mother's birth surname, and making it searchable. Not impossible ... but not likely going to happen soon. ;-)
