Flick,

I did register with that other site but not used it in ages. Was a bit modern for me but if I do not renew my membership on this site that is where I am going.

Flick

Like Maureen, I joined that site when it was formed in 2007, and look in every couple of months or so

It is also where I will go if I leave this site

It's free

It works

Problems seem to be solved in reasonable time.

Most of the people who started it were my mentors on here in my early days.

and .........................

many current members of GR are also regular posters there

On the home page (I had to sign in so noticed things on the home page) I glanced at genes reunited twitter - http://twitter.com/genesreunited -

"Can you find any Christmas names on our site? The funniest one wins 50 credits for our records. Winner announced at 5pm please RT"

I really can hardly believe that I read that.

Well said Flick. As a paying member I expect to be kept up-to-date on the site I am paying for.

IGP I log in and read the boards every day but whether others do or not does not mean that all information should not be put on there first

Oh dear, oh dear.

First Facebook and now Twitter.

Why is a competition on Twitter but not on this site !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I presume you have to register on Twitter to actually take part.

Not worth doing anyway as most members who use this site would not be interested in 50 credits.

Yippee.
I can now log on to Ancestry from my Facebook page.(which I don´t have).
What amazes me is that people are so dead set against I:D cards, but are quite happy to publish personal information to the world from a social networking site. & yes, I know the theory is that info can be kept private, but thats just a theory from what I can gather.

No issues with GR using Facebook at all, in fact more and more suppliers are using FB these days to get their message across to both existing and potential new customers.

However, as I said before, where GR are going wrong is by not posting important information on the GR site at the same time as on FB.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Dec 2011 08:04

IGP

that basically is what we are all saying ......... information should be posted either first on GR, then on FB (even if only minutes apart), or at exactly the same time

..... not days later, and only after a kerfuffle!

Sad thing is that there are probably far more GR members who are likely to look at FB rather than at announcements on the site boards. It is easy to overlook the fact that only a tiny percentage of members ever bother to look at the Community boards at all.

wisechild

wisechild Report 4 Dec 2011 14:32

Surely the reverse is also true.
There are many GR members who aren´t members of Facebook & expect that any info concerning the site they pay membership for should be recieved on that site first.

IGP - I have no problem with GR using FB as a tool to attract new business. But I expect the courtesy, as an existing customer, to be addressed via the service I pay for, and to get that information in a timely manner. Not only after someone who happens to have both GR and FB shares the info.
I unfortunately think GR is falling in to the same trap as many companies today, in that they EXPECT a large degree of "churn" on their customer base, so they do not even try too hard to prevent (or at least lessen) it. Rather than being civil to their existing customer to keep them sweet, they'd much rather take the easy, dare I say lazy, option. Much easier to set up a Facebook page, throw the odd competition at it and let it run itself, than to actually show respect to your existing clientel !!!!
Seems that some people at GR know more about technology than they do about people!

Joy Report 5 Dec 2011 11:40

And there could be quite a lot of people that "like" the genes reunited page in facebook that are not members of genes reunited site; in fact, from some questions asked there, it is obvious that some are not members.

Interesting that twitter sometimes has different posts from genes reunited staff than in genes reunited site and in facebook.

Not stopping, site is slow (using chrome); may try again later.

I neither wish to Tweet nor Re-tweet thanks.

I have friends in their 70's who are avid 'Tweeters' and so are my children, but it's never really appealed to me for some reason.

We have to admit though, that it is a normal part of life for many people of all ages, so I guess GR are just going with the flow.
