Surely Cynthia you are not suggesting that I had forgotten to SAVE my changes??

I assure you that was NOT the case.

I only included the bare facts in my post above but there was much more to it spread over 2 different sessions on the evening of the 15th and morning of the 16th as I wanted to be sure before I reported the problem

I have added about 30 people to my chart since the new tree became available in December and have submitted much feedback over the last few weeks. This latest appears to be a new problem not previously observed..

I understand that Simon, it's just that I spend a lot of time advising new folk how to return to their thread, so I wondered if there could possibly be a connection - in a roundabout way.

So many folk don't read the guidelines before they start using the site so it could be that some haven't looked at the advice given re the tree.

My main mistake in the beginning was not realising that the Save button was so far down the page and then wondering why people weren't being saved. doh :-S

Cynthia,

I may not be a frequent poster on the boards but I am not a new user of GR... I tend to only post on the boards when there is something like this new tree which effects us all.

That "feels" like Genes have been updating the system. I had problems when I submitted my earlier post and got the dreaded error so hit the Back button and tried again. Error again.
Closed down and tried to get back in: Request to enter Password etc.
When I did get back in I discovered a double post!

I rather like the new tree and think it has possibilities but even Phil has admitted there are still problems with it.

Unfortunately, there seems to be is a right way and a wrong way of doing things. :-(

For me, I find that I can only use Mozilla Firefox to enter new data. There do seem to be many more problems with Internet Explorer Version 8 which is my "default" browser. I cannot use IE9 as my OS is Windows XP

The latest problems I have experienced - and have submitted feedback on - are as follows
Add Individual.
When adding an individual, coplete the Quick form but do not Save.
Go straight to Add More details to add a Birthplace etc. Then Save.
I have found that if one saves early and then go to edit then I get an additional entry on my chart.

I added 3 individuals yesterday and then went to edit two others.
When I highlighted the Individual to edit opened the Details Pane, the information shown was for the last person I had "added"
Closed Pane and went back via Edit, Edit more details. This seemed to have worked and I edited the relevant details and Saved.
However.
When I checked later on, the details that I had edited had dissappeared and I had to resort to the old Tree to put the edits in.

The success of any software depends on its ease of use. In the case of the new tree I find this sadly lacking.

There are a few "cosmetic" issues that I think could be better.
The "slider" may look pretty but is a time waster.
The italic print in the Details Pane is difficult to read.
The Date style is not consistant with my chosen one. All my chart uses the format DD MMM YYYY. - or if before 1752 then DD MMM YYYY/YY
I chose that style 3 years ago as that most easily readable and is consistant with the style used in my local computer programme for use with an exported GEDCOM.
There is no incentive to add profile photos They are now well hidden.
Matches require you to click on an entry to discover whether they match trees or records. I would far prefer that just tree matches are shown.

So all in all, not a good start but if at first you don't succeed .......
I am afraid is is testing my patience though..... :-S

Has anyone else noticed that a fair number of the complaints re the tree format are coming from members who are new to the boards?

I've also noticed that many of them don't return to the thread they have commented on or, indeed, started.

Could this be because they don't know how to return?

If so, could their problems with the new tree format possibly include some 'user error' issues?

I had to play around with the format when it first came out and made plenty of errors. I think I have now figured it out.

I, too, remember the outcry of complaints when the 'old - it ain't broke' version came out. It seems as though complaints are par for the course.

"We will not be removing the old version of the tree until we are confident that the new version is in full working order"

Thank goodness for that Katie! So that should give us a couple more years of having a useable version anyway... One that allows us to see all of an individual's details as well as showing where they sit in their immediate family - all on one screen and all at the same time without having some d****d 'fly-out' covering up the relationship info.

Yes, there are undoubted problems with the 'old' tree but it's sooo much nicer to use than the new 'improved' one.

Genes Advisor Report 16 Feb 2012 12:00

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your feedback regarding the tree. We know there are still some problems with the new version and this is why we have not removed the old version of the tree. We will not be removing the old version of the tree until we are confident that the new version is in full working order. Please report all tree problems to theteam@genesreunited along with the email address you use to log in. A lot of the issues seem to be related to individual accounts, so we can not fix them without looking at your tree.

Thanks for your patience whilst we fix these issues. And don't forget the link to the old tree is still available in Family Tree drop down.

Just in case you haven't seen it, Phil Moir has posted a tech update on 'Blogs' re the new tree etc.

Kense Report 16 Feb 2012 09:57

The old tree, if not exactly broken, was clapped out and no longer fit for purpose. The sooner it disappears completely the better. It wll be one less problem for the team to concentrate on.

PLEASE ............................

if you are having ANY kind of problem .......... send an email to GR Support.

You will at least get a response that way ............ and the first will likely be a placebo type of response, so send another email.

That way, GR will at least know how many people are having problems.

They have said on threads and in emails to various people that they keep an eye on Suggestions Board, but do not have the time to read most of the threads.

email address ......... [email protected]

I agree. The new tree is rubbish. Not only does it have problems when you input details it sometimes does not save them. After putting in initial name data it has the first and middle names in the same location. Keep the old tree.

Lynn Report 14 Feb 2012 17:44

I've got the same problem, couldn't download the new tree or even the old yesterday, I've just tried the old tree again and this time it worked. I tried to contact Genes support, but there is no submit button to send your message. Maybe Genes should update everyone with a message on the home page??? i also had duplicate entries on my tree, very frustrating!

My replies to;
Island: Sorry, only I've made it Official...!

Rambling Rose: Just discovered this morning that I could still use the old one... Doh...!

Kirsty & Catherine: Glad I'm not the only one with problems, but sorry of course that you've had the same experiences.

ElizabethK: I've made several comments on the feedback facility, most of them polite, but have had nothing back from GR at all... No huge surprise there though.

ElizabethK

ElizabethK Report 14 Feb 2012 09:41

I hope you are sending all this to GR feedback-we cannot solve them and unless the info gets back to them (not sure if they still check this thread)neither will they :-|
