naughty me........ smack me on the knuckles.

The above postings were in response to Estelle's post to me......... she asked ..... I responded. Perhaps if (my) problems were posted here they would be seen, rather than sending an email which another GR staff member would respond to with the usual blah blah generic response.

It has nothing to do with MY names...... it is the surnames of OTHER FEMALE members. One surname is on the OWNER OF THE TREE the other surmane WHEN YOU SEND A MESSAGE - for the SAME person.

There IS a mention of the new tree.......... taking so long to download.

"GR have stated that the old version cannot economically be maintained in its current state" - Correct, I am told.

So, what on earth is My contacts have to do with the tree, New or Old? This is a completely different issue and has to do with the way that your names are used. i.e.

Current Name

Given Name

Board Name

Yes... this does need clarification but has nothing whatsoever to do with bugs or otherwise with the GR tree.

This is SO confusing when looking for My Contacts

I found Margaret's tree. Let's say her surname is Smith.

I looked at her tree. On my list of Other Trees she is "Margaret SMITH", which is her maiden name, ..... but (let's say she married Mr Jones)........ the name ON THE TREE is Margaret JONES.

If I do a search........find out I have a match with "Margaret"..... click on the name...... and the message goes to Margaret JONES.

On the GR system Women have TWO SURNAMES. It wasn't always this way.

I use my MAIDEN name on here, so nobody gets confused looking for me.

I just counted some of them - on Other Trees, I have 40 Margarets, 12 Anns & 16 Annes. I'll have to keep notes - Maiden and Married names.

LadyScozz Report 21 Apr 2012 02:11

Today's problem

Message waiting for me.......... click............. Error Message...............back......... click..........Message open......... from Margaret (new contact)........ possible connection........ I can view her tree.

Possible problem here........on MY list of Other Trees, I have LOADS of Margarets on that list. The surname on the message may not be the name on the list. It usually isn't. Can you imagine how long it would take (with all the Error Messages and TimeOuts) it would take to look at the trees of all those Margarets, to find the correct tree?

So..... click on VIEW.... wait.......... wait......... I gave up, went off and did something else.......... give you an idea of the time...... I unloaded the dishwasher, stripped the bed, put on a load of washing......... came back.............. and Margaret's tree was still downloading.

So......... now I can go to my tree, look at my LONG list of Margarets, and hope the same surname is there.

That's another question I keep asking GR, but have yet to receive a sensible answer. WHY THIS MIXUP WITH FEMALE'S SURNAMES ON TREE OWNERSHIP AND MESSAGES?

(I also have multipe: Ann, Elizabeth, Jane, Jean, Lynn, Mary, Marie, Susan...go through the alphabet, think of all possible female names........... The GR system makes it difficult to locate the correct tree.)

Last time I asked that question the reply was something like "we recommend members enter the birth name of females". That DID NOT answer my question.

Estelle -I didn't expect you to recognise me by this name.! But I did introduce myself on the (2nd?) post, after you posted.

I was very annoyed. I did as you asked, sent emails with details of the problems, header "ATTENTION ESTELLE" and got the usual blah blah generic response. The responses were not all from Julie, who (as you say) is usually very good.

As I said, I have been emailing about these problems for MONTHS (so have many members)......... all the responses have been the usual... .. we're working on it.

Estelle Report 20 Apr 2012 16:46

Hi Catherine, I apologise for not recognising you on here as I can only see your board name. I have been on leave which is why you maybe didn't get a reply from me. However, I have spoken to Julie from Customer Support who told me that she has been dealing with you personally. I can assure you Julie is doing her best to help you. I know you have received some inadequate responses from us and I am truly sorry about that. Julie is an extremely experienced member of the team and is doing her best to make sure we resolve all of your problems as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
Estelle

Sorry Estelle. I've already sent these emails to you. Your colleagues answered me. The email was titled ATTENTION ESTELLE - so talk to your colleagues about this. THEY should have forwarded them to you, NOT replied to me with a ridiculous response.

WHY BOTHER ADDING "ATTENTION" if it is going to be IGNORED by the person who opens the email? What sort of impression did I get? It looked like you couldn't be bothered responding. Why didn't you follow it up? I realise there are "millions" of members....... but how many constantly email you with the same problems?

WHY DO I KEEP EMAILING GR ABOUT PROBLEMS, WHEN THIS IS THE RESPONSE?

Absolutely ridiculous.

Am I annoyed? YES :-P

YET ANOTHER REASON NOT TO RENEW MY SUBSCRIPTION :-P

I'M FED UP WITH BEING FOBBED OFF

Perhaps I should post the responses here?

"GR have stated that the old version cannot economically be maintained in its current state"

Me IGP please stop posting this comment. After 4 months GRU are nowhere near getting the new thing working so it is obviously not something they can maintain. The level of bugs is such that it is even making it as a topic in general chat. Apart from creating random incorrect relationships and being generally unusable I am aware of the following outstanding bugs: print not working (broken in old tree too), photo upload not working, maps view working again in old tree but missing from new tree ...
A major bug that exists in both trees is that it is impossible to back up the tree complete with photos and notes.
Way to go.

Estelle

I have been emailing you and the team for months.

You asked me to email directly to you (Attention Estelle), which I did, but someone else usually responded. Most of them were "generic" responses, which really annoyed me.

I have kept most of the emails.... shall I send them.... or do you recognise the name...... Catherine?

Genes Advisor Report 19 Apr 2012 16:34

Hi Scozzie, could you please email the bugs directly to me? I'll make sure they are all added to our system and then looked into. I know our tree team are working hard on the tree and trying iron out all the problems. Please send your email to [email protected] and put it for my attention.
Thanks,

Estelle

Aaaaaah - Estelle - I have found LOADS of bugs in the new tree. I've given up trying to use it. I'm not the only one. I know some people like it and have no problems, but I'm not one of them.

I HAVE emailed support. The responseS (note the PLURAL) have been less than pathetic.

I saw on the GR Facebook yesterday, someone was ADVISED BY GR TO USE THE OLD TREE.

Hi Ann, if you have come across a bug with the new tree please could you report it to our customer support team? Their email address is [email protected]. Please send them full details of the problem and they will pass it on to the technical team.

Thanks,
Estelle

I've used Roots Magic for about 6 years. No problems with it at all. I don't even know where the manual is.

But I don't like the new GR tree.

Yes, I know........ the old tree will have to go......... but the new one was rolled out before it was tested properly. I keep asking why it freezes, so far I haven't got an answer. Yes, I email "support"... got the usual generic reply, to which I responded asking for a REAL answer.......... I got an reply, but no answer.

I didn't see much of a difference between the original tree and the next one (except for that horrible flock wallpaper). The original version also listed middle names when we did a search (the listings)........ that was SO useful. But that has gone. I keep asking about that too........ and haven't had an answer.

Come on GR - ASK THE MEMBERS WHAT THEY WANT & NEED

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 15 Apr 2012 14:59

I must be odd, but I quite like the new tree and have had no problems finding my way round.

But then I do use Rootsmagic and you need a degree and a book to work your way round that programme........ :-S

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 15 Apr 2012 12:15

Like it or hate it, the New tree will eventually replace the old one. But then there were those who didn't like the 'old' tree when it was introduced some three years or so ago and preferred the previous one....!

GR have stated that the old version cannot economically be maintained in its current state and in order to facilitate some of the changes coming in the future, such as multiple trees, security options, better printing, alternative displays, etc it needed to be replaced with a newer version.

My main concern that it was rolled out with rather too many bugs, which is causing annoyance to certain members, and getting them fixed is no doubt detracting from progressing to the next, and probably more significant, stages of development still to come.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 15 Apr 2012 05:24

I've suggested to GR that they ask members what they want.

Seems to me most of us don't like the new tree.

No point in GR bringing in stuff most people don't like (especially if it doesn't work).

I've said it before - if we're stuck with the horrible new tree, I won't be renewing my subscription. I'll spend my money elsewhere.

you can opt for the old tree.

Ian Report 14 Apr 2012 19:06

GR family tree set-up now seems a disaster area. The old set-up used to work fine, easy to navigate, easy to edit, everything visible. Now looks like it's been redesigned by someone who didn't even know how to use GR. If anybody can get it to work please give us a user manual because it's driving me spare!!
