There are often 'newbies' to the boards who have actually joined the site many years before, but have either used only the search facilities etc , or just read the boards but never posted,

Their post count when they DO post implies they are new to the boards and also, it may be assumed perhaps to genealogy as a whole...which is often not the case at all.

Some sites have a 'new member' notification when one first posts on a board, obviously this would not be any use here...but perhaps the 'Researching' line in account setting could have a default setting to 'I am new to genealogy' which would automatically show for new members, so that helpers can provide more targeted advice, ie the 'basics' ?

It could then be removed by the individual as soon as they felt they had sufficient experience?

just a thought.
