A suggestion for private messaging

This has probably been suggested in the past but when sending a private message it would be great to see the last login date of the recipient. That way we are not wasting time inboxing people who have not for what ever reason been in to the site for months or even years.

This issue has been talked about many times on the board.

The problem is most of us never sign out at all and access GR via Bookmarks so we physically never type in our email address or password.

Gai, Signing out makes no difference

The site will still no if you have not been active

If you stay signed in and close your browser today then tomorrow you open your browser and go to GR you will still be signed in because it's your browsers history and the cookies that remember that page.

If you stay signed in and close your browser today then clear your cookies and history then tomorrow you open your browser and go to GR then you will have to sign in again,

Also true if the site does certain updates between closing your browser and returning

Every time you close your browser, drop your internet connection or switch off your PC you are, in effect, logged out of the site.

However, the next time to go to the GR site, and provided 1, you browser is set to remember passwords and your cookies have not been deleted, AND 2 GR is also set to remember you, you will be automatically logged back in, as though you had never logged out.

An alternative piece of useful data, which is already held on the system and can be seen for any of you contacts, rather than the last log-in, is info on the last time a member made an update of any kind. This could be a tree update, board posting or personal message.

Go to My Updates and click on more updates to see the sort of activity info that is held for each member in your contacts list, and you will get an idea of what I mean.

To display the date of the last such activity against each members profile when you send them a message would be a relatively trivial piece of work.

So, when you select to send a PM, under the members name, you could see something like

Member since 2008
Last activity, Submitted post 20/07/2011

You could then make a judgement whether or not it is worth sending a message.

Two things.

I'm happy that cookies allow me to link to my research sites without having to log in or out every day- wouldn't want it any other way - to much stress remembering all the passwords.

The Member since date is the date of registration not the actual date of first paymant. The Last activity, submitted post .... many registered member don't actually sumbit any posts
:-D :-D

IGP, Are you sure?

my understanding of the My Updates is directly linked to members who's tree you have access to and not with people you have just sent messages too

My updates can also be turned off by any member

There has been some discussion by The Team about how or if they could/should include 'last date of activity'. GR are aware that this might be beneficial.
