I do not know!!!

I have had an ancestry sub since 2004 ................... and would not let that go.

I am thinking about taking up OH's offer of giving me a sub to FMP as a birthday present ................. as a trial year, to see if it provides anything new for me.

There was a very cheap offer last year to join the US FMP, with all sorts of promises of what was available, which I fell for .................... wasted money!

I am not aware that you can build a tree for free on fmp, as you can on here. I'm sure someone will know.

I will be sorry if a) I feel I can no longer continue to subscribe to GR, as will be the case if they increase my Basic sub by around 150%, or b) GR disappears as a result of BS's actions.

So sad to see Genes going the way it is ,I agree they are not doing anything that is suggested by us.

If they are thinking of putting up the price I would think that would be the end of it ....for me anyway.

Sylvia ...I got the deal with FMP US and it tells me every time I go on ..... seeing as you are from OZ it would be best to us the Australian site for FMP ,click on Oz site and I am away , that has all records from all over the world ,I am very pleased with the deal.

All those who just have there tree on here alone may I suggest having a backup ...just in case ;-).

Pasted from FMP
Start building and sharing your family tree for free. Family Trees are a great way to organize and share your discoveries on any computer or tablet. It is simple and easy just follow the step by step on-screen instructions.

Coming soon to the tree:

Import trees from other sites/software
Search other trees
Append records and pictures to the tree
Create multiple trees

Building a tree on FMP

In a word: don't bother.

I have had a tree on there since 2008 - it's not worth the effort - they seen to be at a stand still. This note is on the front page:
-----------------------------------
"Welcome to the new Family Tree Explorer from findmypast!
We are excited to have you join us for our beta test. Please email us at [email protected] with your questions, comments and ideas.
Please note that the application is still under active development, so some features may be unavailable, disabled or not give the expected result."
-------------------------------------
The tree is at Beta 3.0
and we all know from Genes experience how long it can take to get things up and running.
I imported a GEDCOM back in 2008, quite small - only 2,000 odd people, but it takes so long to load the tree I have given up.............

Since FindMyPast and GR are now one why would you want a free tree on each site ?

Makes one wonder if Sylvia's suggestion of eventual amalgamation is likely

I only know that there will have to be considerable improvement on GR during the next 6 months if I am to renew my sub.

I have a small tree on here, which I haven't touched in years.

Most of my time is spent helping other people find their ancestors, or answers.

I currently pay £9.95 per annum for my sub, sometimes reduced to approximately £7.95 when GR gives a 20% loyalty discount.

I do appreciate that this sub was frozen in 2007/8 when ITV bought GR ............. and that an increase is to be expected.

However, a one-time increase of over 150% to £20 is too much ............... just to help others.

Plus the ham-handed way they are implementing this increase ............. some getting it now while others are not. They're picking and choosing who gets to pay £7.96, and who pays the "new" amount.

GR has traded on "member help" for many years ................. at least, they now acknowledge that it is the other members who do this. They did not for a number of years.

I enjoy the chat with friends I've made on here

BUT

is it all worth £20?????

I believe you are quite right in your message copied below.

I used to subscribe to 1837online [pre FMP] and waited and waited for them to offer a tree builder and sharing facility, but nothing decent arrived and I eventually gave up as after years of 'beta', it was never even possible to import a Gedcom file.

For me there is no point in re-building my large tree unless it is possible to easily compare my research with other peoples' trees as has always been possible at Genes.

For years I have used an annual Ancestry subscription to find a good selection records and then copy and paste into my working Genes tree. Backed up with a weekly exported Gedcom file to my hard disk Family Historian.

The recent appalling Genes experience forced me to upload my large Gedcom to Ancestry but I was dismayed to find that ALL my notes, sources and references were stripped out. Thus I feel forced to stay with Genes and just keep nagging them daily to restore my tree access that has been missing since before Christmas.

Have other people found this problem when uploading a Gedcom file to Ancestry?

Mark,

Are you sure you lost your notes when you uploaded to Ancestry. Go to the person profile view, then click on 'More options' at the end of the 'Search records' 'View his family tree'.... line. Ine of the drop down options is 'View Note'. Click on this and it opens a new sub window with the persons notes... admittedly my last Gedcom upload to Ancestry was 20 December (time for a new one) but it was working OK then.

The current (or one of the current) problems I have with GR is that exporting my tree as Gedcom corrupts some data - for example £ symbols (from Probate records) are always converted to some other wingding type symbol Ð whatever that is.

Please bring back the old tree, before I was able to print my tree without a problem - now I can no longer print it out. I get a mmessage saying my printer says the tree is too big and to wait and when the software is developed I will be able to print it out. I have 302 people on it, but how long do we have to wait? Please give us the option of the old tree, if not I will not be renewing my membership!

Aaahh
Many thanks for your careful description. All is now not lost even if Notes are a bit more hidden when compared to Genes.

Is your Gedcom Export working?

My efforts have failed several times this weekend. It used to spend a few minutes in preparation before going to Exporting. Now no Preparation, straight to Exporting but nothing ever arrives!

Mark,

My Gedcom exported fine last night worked fine (nearly 30,000 names - not quite as big as yours! c14Mb file) - except for the same old £ symbols problem again.

You should get an email from 'Support' entitled GedCom Processor? to which your Gedcom file is attached...

Gedcom Export "Stuck on the server"!
OK today.
Genes response:
Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

This problem has now been resolved and will work correctly if you would like to try again, I am afraid you tree was stuck on the server.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that was caused by this problem.

Hi Everyone

Is it possible to export a tree more than once from Genes.

I would like to put mine on Tribal Pages as well Ancestry.

Sue :-)

Kense

Kense Report 9 Feb 2013 08:31

Yes you can export it as often as you like but wait until the first one has finished.

However once you have one exported GEDCOM file you can load that file into as may FH programs as you have.

WHO owns GR? Surely it is the people who keep subscribing to them!! I will not be renewing my subscription next time if the 'powers that be' don't do something about all the things that are wrong/troublesome with this 'new' site! LISTEN UP GR and answer some of the complaints with ACTIONS!!!! You made a bad choice by changing the old site....be truthful and admit and reward us by returning our lovely old site.....PLEASE!!!
Very unhappy......June Jarman :-(

I would like to be able to use trees to find decendents of the people who owned a Victorian Bible I have

PeeEmm

PeeEmm Report 27 Feb 2013 12:52

Hello Helen,
That is a very nice thing to do.
I think you would need to do a search from the main page of Genes with the Surname of the Family in the Bible you have.
If the entries in the Bible give a location for the family, you may be able, via the Genes search facility to get some names that match.
Then using the first name and Surname it could lead you to a possible match. Of course the dates will be the main route to finding a probable match.
You need to be aware that this family might not be one that has a Genes Reunited member - in which case you could then extend your search to the Census Returns for the years in question.

Do you realize that some of the other community pages on Genes Reunited have volunteers who would be only too willing to help you?

Regards

PeeEmm :-)

There are so many bugs with the Family Tree that it is almost unusable. I would suggest that Tech Support ask your I.T. people to get their fingers out and fix the serious bugs.

Examples:
Hiding Living Relations - only seems to work if you set this option recently, for old accounts, the new tree seems to have forgotten this preference.

Changes to a persons details in the slide out panel are not always reflected on the tree box for the person - i.e. changing the date of death is not being updated until you exit the tree and go back in.

Copying from the clipboard is not working at all.

These are just 3 of the many serious issues with this tree - very poor development release in my opinion.

Kense

Kense Report 2 Mar 2013 08:47

I have tried changing the death date and as BryanAA says it did not update. However by using the refresh button (F5) I avoided having to exit the tree although it does take you back to the root.

Subsequently every time I changed a death date it appeared immediately on the display.

JerryH

JerryH Report 2 Mar 2013 20:09

I have observed similar problems though I find that moving up or down a generation or two and then going back to my entry normally clears the problem.

Have also found a problem with the tree search in that it does not always work.

I tried searching for "William Morgan" on my tree. Twice I was told that there were no matches. Each time I retyped the names and each time I got nothing. So I tried someone else and it then worked fine.
Went back to William and got the 8 matches I had expected.

Another thing that annoys me (in Immediate View) is that spouses are shown according to their date of birth rather than by date of Marriage. And it took two emails to Support before they admitted that this was a "design" problem.

But despite these niggling problems. I far prefer the Genes tree to other On line trees I have tried so live with the hopes that these problems will get sorted out in the not too distant future.
