Sue, I think you will find that most sites develop and update their trees from time to time. Ancestry have just done some work on theirs.


It really IS worth while taking the time to look through the guidelines.

ancestry has definitely changed their tree ....... upgraded it.

AND there were lots of complaints on their FB wall last week.


Upgrading sites is called progress.

If they don't upgrade, they lose clients, who move on to more progressive sites.



I heard a comment yesterday re new drug trials.


New drugs have to undergo testing before they are released to the public, to ensure they are safe.

Sometimes it happens that a drug is found to have serious problems about 2-3 years after general release.

It was pointed out that test runs use only a small number of people. It is not until the drug is taken by thousands or millions of people that problems might be spotted.


It struck me that this is EXACTLY what happens with updates to software programs.


They can be tested by less than 100 people, several hundreds of people, or even a million people ........................ but there will always be that snag that will only affect a few people after release to millions of people.

1..Indicate in a box outside the tree the name of the person selected, so that it is possible to navigate within the tree and determine relationships without selecting a new name and then, by clicking on the name in the box outside the tree, return to the position of that person on the tree without having to type the name in the "search" box. Anyone with a large tree is likely to appreciate this time saving feature which used to be available before the tree was "improved".

2. On the "search" panel please make the cursor active automatically on the firstname box when the panel is opened. A very simple improvement.

Please get rid of the useless avatars and indicate sex by colour. I am sure many of my relatives would feel insulted to be represented by such "cute" drawings which do nothing but take up space that would be better used otherwise. If, someday, I am able to print my tree it would look silly with these drawings, the like of which I have never seen on any tree.

Surely your first point is covered by opening the (horrid) 'fly out' editing panel on the right side of the tree? If you have selected someone in the tree, their details are those that are shown in the Edit fly-out panel.

Good point about the cursor - it needs to be 'active' in all the similar situations - eg, when 'Adding' a new person, etc.

So far as the daft avatars, I agree they are rather ghastly. However, if you upload photos to your Keepsafe, you can then select one of them as a person's 'Profile' picture. This then replaces the avatar for that person on the main tree. It still, of course, leaves numerous nasty avatars for all the people you don't have photos of...

You could, of course, upload a photo of a plain sheet of blue or pink to replace the avatars for people you don't have photos of.

Incidentally Ancestry and FTM also have cute pictures of men & women on their trees.

A.....has updated its site but they do give you the option of the old or the new search site and it has been that way for a very long time now .

I can choose for myself if I use the old site or the new ...I choose the old as I know it well and that is what is going wrong on here .

We have not been given any choice.......Take it or change your set up.

Tried Firefox...no difference.
Tried Chrome ..did not like it .

I am a paying member and I want what I paid for please.

IT has been a long while now since GR made the changes and I think they have had plenty of time to fix the problems.

Save button at the top of the page in the tree would help.
The Compatibility off and on again amateurish to say the least...should already be fixed.
Tree is loading a bit quicker and I am still using XP IE 8 .

Cynthia - re Tree Printing

The Q&A link gives exactly the same instructions as you gave to me some days ago
I'm sorry but it just does not work - When one loads the full tree and click on to the print icon there are no printing instructions , only the same message that has been there for months (some nonsense about talking to my printer, which cannot cope with a tree of my size and saying that the print facility shouldn't take too long)
The tree which I wish to print contains just 214 names

They only rarely respond on these threads .........................


...... the people who are responding to you are only members like yourself, who are making suggestions that have worked for them.



Complaining on threads really does very little ........... and most certainly does not make support and technical people aware of just how many people are having pronlems, or which are the major problems.

Would it be possibleto have a save prompt when switching between people.
There was one on the old tree and I m notorious for losing info because I forgot to save it..

Hmm. Interesting how quiet this thread has become recently. I can't believe its because we are all now happy with the (horrid) new tree. I rather imagine it has more to do with the total lack of response from them at GR...

I have given up sending feedback which, in general , seems to be ignored.

A case in point. Phil Moir stated on another post a couple of months back that "Cousins can now marry"
I thought great. At long last something is now being done to correct a long standing problem and that I would no longer need to Export a Gedcom, edit it in FTM and then re-import the changes. There are I think eight such instances on my chart that I have dealt with as above.

However.....
Whilst the Immediate View works fine (as it always has), the same still cannot be said for the other views, ie Ancestor, Descendants and Full.
Each fails to show the Cousin's union correctly.
One such example is the Ancestor view from my Gt Grandfather Frederick.
His parents, Aaron and Ann were first cousins, Their fathers being the brothers Joseph and John respectively.
The Chart however shows Ann's father John as the son of his brother Joseph's wife.
Looking at a Descendants view of the same part of the chart using Joseph and John's father Edward as a starting point, then, while both his grandchildren, Aaron and Ann are shown, the union is missing and so are all their offsping, including my Gt Grandfather.

So whilst part of the job has been done, it is really only a partial solution.

Far to many suggestions on hear to no if this has been suggested before so here goes

Could GR include a Help section within the My Tree page

It appears members post on the community boards when they have a problem with entering data/records to their tree,

All the FAQ's Complete FAQ Listing and instructions are accessed through the Main site under the help tab so are not obvious whilst on the tree page

Please Add a obvious/prominent link to that page from the My Tree page

Hi Porkie Pie,

I think you might be right - a good idea.

I imagine it might be quite easy for GR to make a 'link' from the tree directly to the help section without having to leave the tree and then go to the FAQ's.

BUT will they read this and even listen?

I have two suggestions:-

1) I find the "List" facility quite useful, however I would like to see the year of marriage on there.

2) When setting up a persons profile there is a drop down box to choose if they are divorced or not, I would like to see a similar facility or a tick box to show if they are deceased or not for when the date of death cannot be established.
