I can see there's only one Edith Paddock in Berks in the 1891 and 1901 census but I can't view it as my subscription's expired.

Can you post those Rose? I'm curious to see if we can make a family connection to Annie Noble. I can't seem to find a suitable Annie Noble in Berks.

Hi Vivienne,

Whoever registered Henry James' birth wasn't a blood relative. They (whoever they were) provided Henry's mother's details and had to sign the stat dec. It wasn't Annie. I know this might sound harsh but could Annie have been simple? She may have needed help registering the birth.

On my mother's birth cert, her mother's details were provided by a non relative who signed a stat dec. This person's details don't appear on the cert.

It can be very confusing but from what I can gather, Annie wasn't living with family when her first son Henry was born. Possibly an employer or workmate registered the birth for Annie? Only Annie's details would have appeared and non relative's wouldn't.

Annie was living in Edith's house when her 2nd son Aubrey was born. Edith, being a relative registered Aubrey on Annie's behalf after Annie's death. Because Edith was related, she didn't have to sign a stat dec and her details appear on the cert.

I hope this makes sense.

henry james noble 12/03/1913 born farley hill reading reg on 18 /04/ 1913. by
annie noble[mother].41 russell street
as per declaration dated 17 april 1913 and then she reged him on the 18th
aubrey born 18/05/1917 at 34 highgrove st reading reged on 11/08 1917 by edith thorn of 34 highgrove street [ occupier]
no declaration.
so why then did annie have to do a declaration for henry being his mother and not edith for aubrey who wasnt his mother ?

Hi Vivienne,

Have a very close look at Aubrey's birth cert. If anyone other than immediate family registered his birth, they would have had to sign a statutory declaration when providing mother's name. "As per declaration" should be written somewhere on the cert if Edith, the informant wasn't related to Annie.

If it's not there then Edith and Annie were related.

Is there an earlier birth reg for Aubrey? I'm wondering whether Edith registered him in case his mum hadn't done so. The gap seems a bit odd otherwise.

Could possibly be linked, if Edith was a relation?

Births Dec 1893
Noble Edith Clara Reading 2c 343

Also possibly linked (if Henry James was named after Annie's father perhaps?):

Marriage
Name: James Henry Noble
Year of Registration: 1887
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Cookham
County: Berkshire
Volume: 2c Page: 883
Other names Emily Ann Radbourne OR
Mary Ann E Wilkins

Have you got Henry or Aubrey's marriage certs - you may get some clues from them?

I guess she assumed that Annie would register him once she got better.
What are the details of cause of death? Were they related to the birth. I would imagine that a stranger who shared the house wouldn't have been looking after Aubery and his brother unless she had some means of supporting them.

Annie noble died on august 4th 1917aged 26 in reading hospital after giving birth to aubrey noble in the may.Informant of her death was the hospital registrar.I was hoping for a friend or employer!
Aubrey was reg by an Edith Thorn on 11th august 1917 to annie noble a domestic servant.
Annie Noble also had Henry James noble in 1913[berks reg] out of wedlock who is my number 1 sons grandfather.
There are no births of annie noble in berks and 7 to choose from through the country.
Any ideas or help of how i could narrow down her birth please?
Also how to find out who may have brought the boys up or how to find what institution they may have been placed in?
my ex hubby does not speak to me so there is no chance of asking his side so all help gratefully recieved.
