Many thanks, Choccy, for your help. I have the certificate -bought prior to the info being on-line! I really don't know where to look next! There are no family anecdotes related to this family branch either.

Thank you for your time and interest. Yes, I've also had this under consideration! I've checked this Thomas out and was the one I traced originally but although there are similarities I don't think he is the one. I suspect that in the 1871 census Thomas had recently had his leg amputated and that is why his son was looking after him. I also have wondered if he had returned to work! It is rather amusing but I would love to find out about him. Perhaps it might account for his unknown death as I can't find it on UK records. :-)

ChristinaS Report 26 Oct 2013 10:41

I can't see him on the Crew Lists on findmypast (How on earth did he manage to be a Ship's Steward with a false leg! That must have been hard for him).

Do you think this might be him on the 1861 census. I know the place of birth is different from the 1871, but the family don't seem to be consistent with that detail.

Can anyone suggest where I might find information about servant workers on ships?

3 years further on and still struggling with my FULLER brick wall! The only movement is that on Mary Ann Fuller's death certificate it states her husband's occupation as a "ship's steward" which is probably why I can't find him in any census other than 1871. Still haven't found a suitable death for him. I have a couple of other ideas of what he might have been up to but -one thing at a time!

You're welcome, gina. It was a pleasure. Good luck with your searching. If I find anything more I'll let you know.

Once again, a big thank you, Libby and Rose! I've had fun checking out all the information you provided. Sometimes its very useful to bring in fresh pairs of eyes, especially when sometimes the obvious is staring at you! I still can't find any marriage for Mary Ann and Thomas and it had crossed my mind that she might have been married before. There is also the possibility I might be able to go back another generation thanks to your support.

THANK YOU Libby and Rose for your efforts. Some of the info I've already checked but you have given me lots of other options to persue. I'm currently time poor but will get back to you later today . Thank you again.

Just a thought, could Mary Ann have been a widow when she married Thomas and therefore married in her previous husband's name? I've searched for a Mary Ann/Thomas marriage, but had no luck.

Sorry Rose,

You're probably right, as we know the censuses have many mistakes. Lazy scribes/enumerators, householders giving wrong info, it's a wonder we ever find some people, especially in 1841.

I'll leave you to it, it's past my bedtime.

The family members all match up. Francis is Thomas on the image. The mother is listed as being born Hampshire too, but it's Brighton in later censuses.

Are you sure that's Mary Ann in 1841? Mary Ann was born in Brighton.

I have a birth cert. for 1856 which states both parents names-dad Thomas Fuller, a valet, Mum Mary Ann Fuller, formerly Knight. Full address given in Southampton. I'm having trouble finding their marriage, and earlier records. In 1871 I have Thomas, born Kennington Middlesex, now an amputee, previously a butler, being looked after by his son, Alfred, in Fareham, Hants. Thomas is dead before 1879 when his son marries, in Marylebone. Nothing on Mary Ann. I do not know how to find definate information on her as there are several in the Fareham area, and no marriage evidence despite looking under various names. Any suggestions welcome.
