Should have done this earlier , thanks folks for the replys to this problem ..

Whats come apparent over the last few days that its the old adage of not jumping in as with all programs there are limits with some being better than others

One of the reason im looking at other software/ ways of recording this is down to the fact of finding thing on my tree im zoomed right down and its still hiding.

I would ask the question why?

When I first started out over ten years ago I thought the same as you and tried maintaining separate trees for different family lines. However it soon became apparent that this was going to be a real pain, and after a few months I went back to just one master tree which is the definitive record of all my research. This is held on my PC using FTM, my preferred tree package.

That's not to say I don't ever have split off or cut down customised versions. I do, several dozens of them in fact all created with a specific purpose in mind at the time. Producing customised reports or file extracts of specific lines for family or other researchers is easy as FTM and indeed most other PC tree packages allow you to do this routinely.

The trees I have on here and other websites are also copies which I replace with new versions once or twice each year as things move on.

If you are worried about size, then don't. GR did hit performance problems with trees over 10,000 names a while ago but these seem to have been largely resolved. Commercial PC packages can typically handle up to 250,000 names.

I have four trees on here. I use the same email address for all four but use a different password.

Unfortunately GR have decided that members can no longer create multiple accounts/trees using the same email address. For those who have multiple trees they can continue to access them all. For anyone now wanting multiple trees, members will have to create new accounts using a different email address for each additional tree they want.

One of the major pitfalls that Genes do not seem to want to do anything about.

Which is a shame, as I think that many people would love to be able to split their tree without having to have the free account.

One reason I now have my tree on Ancestry, you can have as many trees as you wish.

So I have my main tree on there, and then about 6 smaller ones where I have taken certain branches and given them their own tree for my own benefit, whilst still maintaining all my records on my larger tree. :-D

Welcome to Genes and welcome to the boards.

No you aren't missing anything and there isn't a way to split your tree on Genes.

If you would like a second tree on here you will need a second account and this can be a free account. On your paid account you can download any records and save them to your computer. You can then upload these records from you computer to you tree.

No, you're not missing something - there isn't the facility to have more than one tree at the moment.

What some people do is register again but with a different password. You can have a 'free' account but obviously on that one you wouldn't be able to send messages or search for records. Use the current one for that.

If you are planning to 'split' your tree rather than re-enter the details, you'd need to down load the tree to your computer in the form of a gedcom, then 'split' it using an offline tree programme.

There are some free versions around - just do an internet search.

I may be wrong having used Genes for about 3 weeks now but my tree is growing rather large [ my dad was one of 7 and mums side is large as well ]. My plan was eventually to stop the tree and then split the family line [ ie down dads and mums line etc on new trees .. but i can find a button that will allow me to start a new tree .. am i missing something ? :-S
