maybe Bernhard-/Bernhardt.....if he had connections to a synagogue they have excellent records,

Andree and Hansen arent usual german names.
did he use any unusual names for any children that could link to his family.?

Frank Report 25 Sep 2013 20:23

Yes Bernard Hansen married a Hansen, but shes from Danish lines. have her covered

No unsual names, one son was called Herbert Bernard Otto - The Otto came from the mother as part of her fathers family name

Bernard may have been born in Hamburg, but the parents from elsewhere

The usual use of Bernard would suggesy Norway rather than Denmark

Have you tried searching on the following ...................

Kay???? Report 26 Sep 2013 09:31

In 1892 Hamburg had a major cholera outbreak,,,,,,

I would guess Joannes as a mariner would have married a local girl? and docked in Hamburg Port? so you may need to employ someone local to that area to search for a baptism record,,a google search will help with finding what steps you need to go down....

I think Hamburg was the main district out of 7.also ***Johannes*** is the masculine name.

I see he died in 1919 in Cardiff, it may be worth you contacting the local records office to see if they will do a search for his alien registration card. All foreign nationals were, I believe, required to register during WW1 - some of those cards have proved to have quite a lot of details, including a photo, in the past.

Also, he may have been interred for the war - maybe some records for this?

This thread is rather long, an not connected with your search, but the poster had success with the Glamorganshire records on her foreign ancestor.
