BECOMING FRUSTRATED WITH GENES REUNITED ON TWO COUNTS -- THE FIRST BEING MISSING EXTENDED TREES FROM THE MAIN LINEAGES.
RESULTING WITH LOSS OF RESEARCHED DATA; WITH THE HALTING OF FURTHER RESEARCH.
THE SECOND ISSUE BEING DESPITE THE SUPPORT TEAM STATING THEY WILL RESPOND TO ANY REQUEST FOR HELP WITHIN 2 TO 3 DAYS -- THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 2 WEEKS WITH STILL NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OR REPLY OF ANY KIND.
IS THIS NORMAL ---- AND IS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCING THE SAME UNSATISFACTORY PROBLEMS.
BECOMING IRRITATED;
SHEILA.

Sheila, please tell us that you have kept a copy of your research and are not using this or any other website as the sole storage place for many hours research.

Like many others, I only keep the bare bones of my research on here. I use Familytree Maker for electronic storage (backed up to a memory stick). I also have hard copies of my research. I have been researching family history for over 30 years and wouldn't trust any website to look after the research that I have spent many hundreds of pounds and hours gathering.

Sheila, are you sure that when you open your tree you are showing the FULL option and not the IMMEDIATE FAMILY option?

Inky1 Report 17 Dec 2013 09:54

FULL option is fine provided the tree contains relatively few names. Otherwise click LIST & you will see how many names your GR tree has. However, a 5000 name tree would result in a 5000 row list.........

Best is to click Search Tree and enter First name and Surname of someone that you know that you have entered, but cannot see. (For some time now I do not get any results if I only enter a Surname)

Hello Sheila and welcome to the Community boards. :-)

As Sheila is a new poster, I will let her know about the replies to her query. :-)

I have never lost any data either from GR. Sometimes your tree fails to fully download to your browser, giving the impression things are missing. Clearing your browser cache or increasing it's size can sometimes solve this.

However as rootgatherer has already mentioned, only ever keep 'throwaway' copies of your tree on websites, not the definitive version. I also use FTM as my prime record and from time to time upload extracts to sites such as GR.

RE MISSING DATA ON TREE
HI
THANK YOU ALL WHO HAVE HELPED & ADVISED WITH MY DILEMMA OF MISSING DATA ON MY TREE.
PARTICULARLY GR MEMBER INKY1 WHO ADVISED THE PROBLEM OF RETRIEVING THE MISSING DATA BY GOING ONTO LIST & ENTERING BOTH CHRISTIAN & SURNAMES WHERE KNOWN.
THANK GOODNESS THIS WAS SUCCESSFUL AND THE MISSING EXTENDED LINEAGES ARE NOW SHOWN.
HOWEVER THE PROBLEM STILL REMAINS OF THE SAME DATA NOT SHOWING ON FULL & INTERMEDIATE AND OTHER OPTIONS AND I,AM STILL AWAITING A REPLY FROM GR SUPPORT TEAM TO HELP RESOLVE THE PROBLEM.
INSPECTORGREENPEN SUGGESTS THE PROBLEM MAY BE DOWNLOADING OR BROWSER FAULT I WILL OF COURSE CHECK THESE OUT.
MENTION HAS BEEN MADE OF GR MEMBERS USING FAMILYTREE MAKER FOR THEIR TREES SAFE KEEPING RATHER THAN TRUSTING WEBSITES.
I WILL BOW TO THIS ADVICE AND WILL PURCHASE A FAMILYTREE MAKER TO COMMENCE IN THE NEW YEAR ONCE WORK HAS SETTLED DOWN.
ONCE AGAIN MANY THANKS FOR HELP & ADVICE.
REGARDS,
SHEILA.

I use RootsMagic which is free - no need to buy a program unless you really want to.

Thanks for the mention of RootsMagic, Beverley.
I hadn't heard of it before, in spite of looking for a friendly non-website tree programme for some time, from which to produce a narrative report.
After some investigation I've now bought the basic non-free version - only £19.95 - and find it excellent, and easy to use.

I'll still maintain my GR tree, though.
