Old Marriages

I have only just noticed that when you search old marriages you no longer get the names of possible matches. This means that you will never find the name of the partner unless you apply for the record which costs money. I thought that was what I was on here for?
Is this causing anyone else problems. Can we get GR to put it back?

Use freebmd

I just tested it out on my gt grandfather

What a waste of 5 credits.....told me nothing about who he married

As I said above use Freebmd and click on the blue numbers next to the name to see the choices of spouse

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Jan 2014 21:18

most of us use freebmd for marriages, births and deaths between July 1 1837 and about 1965.

It is free, as the name indicates ................... and it was available before GR started carrying the records, hence why we still use it.

jax Report 29 Jan 2014 21:27

We only get to know about these other sites when we are told Sylvia (well I did)

What about the poor unknowing member who has purchased credits and then finds the record tells them nothing

true, Jax

I started researching online in 2004 ................. GR was THE site to build your tree, and communicate with other members who would help you.

The site carried no records at all at that time ................... so we all had to search around for the best places to find information.

There were a few free sites ................ and freebmd was the one recommended by all the "older" members as the only place to find bmds from July 1 1837. The number of records on freebmd has increased enormously since 2004 as the result of work done by volunteers.

The 1901 Census had just come online ............. as a subscription site.

Ancestry existed of course as did a couple of other sites that have since merged or disappeared.

Back in 2003, when GR had no records, there was a page - at least - of links to other genealogy sites, which is how many of us learnt what resources were available. (I did, anyway)

Not sure when the list disappeared..............

I asked GR where the records had gone, and they confirmed they had taken them off. I have asked that they consider putting them back as they make research much simpler. They have said they have several projects on the go, but may consider this. I really hope so as charging from one site to another gets confusing. Must be my age!!

jax

jax Report 30 Jan 2014 19:13

Well if GR are charging people to view marriage records, then they should show the spouse names

I spent 5 credits looking up my gt grandparents marriage and when it asked if I wanted to pay to view all I got was his name where married and when

As it happens I do know these details and have the parish register image from Ancestry (London marriage)

So supplying what every other site shows (even ones that are free) is a project to them :-D

I want my 5 credits back please GR after all I paid for them in my yearly subscription

Well I think that is disgusting charging you for a name you already knew!!

How dare they!!! Obviously you want to know the partners name to get further on in your tree.

What a stupid idea.

Am I missing something here. On many older records there will often be up to 10 names listed, how on earth would Genes or any other site know who the spouse was???

As this is how they are recorded on FreeBMD, and most Genealogy sites use the transcribed FreeBMD records, how do they know who is married to who?

I know I usually write down the names and forward to next census etc.

Tell me I am not going mad, or that I have misunderstood the original post

:-S

jax

jax Report 31 Jan 2014 14:08

Yes DC there is normally a choice

The marriage I looked up was in 1897 so there should have been 4 names on that page.......I paid my 5 credits and got no names just the registration details, what I would need to purchase the cert

Just to add I don't really need these credits they were given to me when I renewed last year......so use them for testing

But I wouldn't be very happy if I did want them for my research

As I do not use this site re.search, I am now going to ask a really stupid question

Does all this now mean that Genes has the FreeBMD records and it amending them so you only get the one result? If so surely they are contravening the rights of the FreeBMD site

jax

jax Report 31 Jan 2014 14:48

Well according to GR adding the choice of spouses would be another project for them to consider :-D

Maybe the GR staff don't use this site either for research, as they wouldn't get very far would they?

meeander

meeander Report 31 Jan 2014 19:04

Thanks for your positive responses chaps. Unfortuately no response from GR.

jax

jax Report 31 Jan 2014 19:08

Maybe the community manager for this board could shed some light on the subject??

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 1 Feb 2014 13:51

Wonders, how can Genes say they are considering adding the spouse to old records

Are they going to buy loads of certificates to verify spouses in order to save us money!!!

jax

jax Report 1 Feb 2014 14:00

DC I don't think you are understanding the problem

We are not asking them give the correct spouse......we just want somesort of idea of who they married as in a choice of 2 or even 4......not nothing at all

As you can see I posted the marriage for Louisa Emma Taylor.......where on that record does it give any spouse name

That cost me 5 credits for what ?

jax

jax Report 1 Feb 2014 17:24

That may well be free on FMP Thelma as it would be on freebmd....but it does not help as to why GR actually have marriage records on here (before 1912 anyway) that do not give any indication of who the person you are looking at married

As I used credits I am not going to try a more recent marriage to see if they are any use
