Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 22 Jul 2007 21:00

Welcome Back……… Linda. Was it a question of “ What’s this button do ? “ …… To answer your question Re:~ Does the Father have to be present at the Baptism ? If you look at the Parish Baptism Registers for that year 1831. Then it was the Law that only the Fathers name & Occupation was recorded on the Registers. So the Register would read thus :~ 1831. Entry No. *** 26th. Dec. John Christopher Son of Robert & Sarah Gent. Shepshed. Fathers Occupation.:~ Then the name of the Officiating Minister. So he did not HAVE to be present. But he would not be much of a Father if he did not…….. You have the marriage certificate of John Christopher ? Have a look along to the column ( Usually the last column the right side ) Where it asks for the Occupation of the Father This might give you some clues as to were he might have been. If he was in the Farming Business then he could have been away on a farm some where. This would also explain his name not put down on the Census returns for the Gent Household There is a possibility that Robert had enlisted to fight the Crimean War 1854~56. ? MIKE. Just had a look at the 1851. Census returns HO 107 / 2084 / 404 / Page 7. Keyword = Gent. It's faint but I'm sure it states that Sarah is a Wid. aged 50 Pauper Lace Worker b Shepshed Beverly or Eliane can you confirm this please ?

Linda Report 22 Jul 2007 21:55

Hi Mike I've looked at Christophers marriage cert and it states that Robert was a Labourer so he could of worked on a farm. The Sarah you found seems to fit my Sarah. In the 1851 cencus she is living with her mother in Shepshed Bridge st. Thanks Mike for your help.

Mike/Linda The entry looks like it has been corrected and should be Sarah Allwood (triangle symbol by her name) Name: Sarah Gent [Sarah Allwood] Age: 50 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Relation: Daughter Father's name: Thomas Mother's name: Mary I agree it looks like widow, Elaine

Linda

Linda Report 23 Jul 2007 08:39

Hi Elaine Thanks for comfirming question on Sarah Gent Nee Allwood I didn't see that she was a widow when I looked at the cencus for 1851. Two pairs of eyes are better than one, or in my case three pairs including Mikes. I will have to go to Shepshed and look at burial register. Thanks again Linda

I wonder if anyone could help me? I'm trying to find the baptisms for my gt grandfather and his siblings. His parents William Tansey and Florence Platts were married at St Matthews Church in August 1902, my gt grandad William Tansey was born 2 months later in Curzon Street followed by at least 9 other children over a 25 year period (I know there is more children I have yet to find!). I have been to the leicester records office and so far have had no luck finding them at the St Matthews parish. Does anybody have any records from around this time that could help me or suggest were to luck next time I go to the records office? I know they stayed in the same area. Thanks for any help, Vicky

Mike Do you have many look ups Thursday? Am after a buriel from a death cert and am sure it will be St George's as usual. Have death for Charles Henry Ward died 5th May 1858 1yr son of James Ward fishmonger (master). The informant is a Catherine Hart of 19 Curzon Street, was hoping for a burial at St George's a couple of days later, son of James and Maria, need to confirm the mother before I can decide if he is my Ward. It is a recurring family name ie Charles Henry Thanks (can wait if you are bogged down) Elaine
