Mike Brilliant, many thanks, the query related to my wife's side, another slot in the puzzle, she is now 'a happy bunny'. New query please Mike. As an expat, I remember delivering evening newspapers, there was a sister paper to the Mercury the name of which I cannot recall. I need details as to how I can obtain a copy of an article in the 1940's, is there a copy service from the microfiche held by the main Leicester Library, if not can you advise who I contact please ?. Regards Jon O'Kent

Mike A very warm welcome back, I'm sure Bev and I thought you were having a knees up in the Bahamas or somewhere, but alas it seems you have been working harder than ever. Hope all goes well with the new 'puter'. Re the Hinckley query, I have a marriage cert dated 1905 which mentions 'Sunnyside', Ashby Rd, occupant was a Chauffeur, also a birth Cert dated 1910 showing 3 Ashby Rd, both Surnames are ARMER. I am trying to establish who would have employed a Chauffeur in 1910 ?. Kind regards Jon O'Kent

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 4 Aug 2006 20:55

Greeting’s All . . . . I’m Back……… Thank you all for your concern as to my welfare…… Sorry for the delay in answering of late. This was due to moving the total stock of the Scout Equipment Department To the International Camp ( 4,000 Scouts & Guides) within my County…. Plus I’ve a new PC now…So time devoted to down loading programs etc …. ( Still not finished but enough to manage for now ) Right…… F.A.O. Jon O’ Kent…….. I’ve had a look at your problem re District for the 1901 Census for Ashby Road Hinckley…… Although there is no direct reference to Ashby Road…… It should be within District No. 7. On the 1891. Census there are two references to Ashby Road. . . RG 12. / 2504 / 14. / Page. 18. The Family Living & Working at the Cemetery Lodge. RG 12. / 2504. / 14. / Page.21. Brick Yard off Ashby Road. This made me wonder why no references to dwellings on Ashby Road ? Had a look at an old map of 1890 for Ashby Road There appears not to be any Houses on the Western side of Ashby Road Just open fields and what looked like Allotments And on the Eastern side there was just the Cemetery site with the Lodge….. Hence no reference to dwellings………. But dwellings could have been built after the 1901.Census …. Were you looking for a Mabel Tompkins ? If so…… found her within the Household of Agnes Atkins ( Mother ) 1901. :- RG 13. / 2962. / 60. / Page. 33. Middlefield House. Off Factory Road.( just around the corner from Ashby Road. ) Named as Mabel Tompkins aged 28. Married. Born Hinckley. But no sign of a Husband….. And 1891. Census RG. 12./ 2504. / 14. / Page. 22. Mabel Atkins aged 18. Single. With her Mother at the same address as above. Hope this is of help to you. ? …. MIKE….Back to installing programs …:0((((
