Mike, I've just seen how long it took you to type up Elaine's newspaper report - another time, if you have such a long document, scan it and send it to me and I'll type it up for you.

I also have an OCR program which works pretty well if the original text is in good condition.

That Palmer could be anyone, Mike, unfortunately I know nothing at all about Sarah.

Can I ask you for some more look-ups when you have time? I'm trying to tidy up some loose ends with my Pools.

I'm looking for the marriage of Richard Pool (bap 1776) and Letitia (age and maiden name unknown); first child born 1802, or possibly 1800.

I have a possible marriage for them in Kent, but I'm not certain, and I'd like to be sure there isn't a marriage for them in Leicestershire. He was born in Ibstock, but the children were baptised in Leicester .

I'm also looking for a marriage and/or burial for the following children of Richard and Letitia; I can't find any of them on the 1841 census or in the Welford Road cemetery.

- William Pool, baptised 1802
- Mary Ann Pool, baptised 1806
- Stephen Pool, baptised 1808
- Selina Pool, baptised 1809.

They were all baptised at St. Margaret's except William, who was baptised at St. Martin's.

I already have marriage/burial/census information for the other children (Joseph, Henry James and Letitia), so there's no need to look for them.

I don't mind this being on the thread, thanks for asking. I do know Mr Wigley! He is intertwined with this branch of Wards and takes 2 of the children and trains them as tailors. I think his first child died and he seems to have doted on the Ward children.

Reads thus :~

CHILD KILLED BY FALL OF TIMBER……..An inquest held a week last Friday
At the “ Star Inn “ Belgrave-gate Before the Coroner J. Gregory Esq.
On the body of Annie Elizabeth WARD, five years of age, who met with her death the previous night, under the following circumstances:---Frederick Snaith deposed that he lived next door to Mr Samuel Cragg, Cabinet maker
Belgrave-gate, and last night, shortly before eight of the clock he was at the top of the passage which lead to Mr Cragg’s timber yard, where he noticed some boards fell over, and Annie Cragg run into the house, and has she passed him She said that a little girl was under the boards, but she did not think she was hurt.

Mr Cragg (Sen) went down the yard at once, and witnesses accompanied him. They removed the boards and got the girl out between them.
She was insensible, and bled very much from the mouth, He had previous noticed the diseased and Annie Cragg paying together in the passage. Annie Cragg 10 years of age, said that she lived at her Grandfather’s Samuel Cragg as above.

The diseased, who lived at Mr James B.WIGLEY’S…… her Uncle, and who frequently came to play with her, was six years old. She very often came and slept at her house.

On the previous night they were playing amongst the timber in the yard…….She was running about on a small pile of boards, not knowing at the time where the diseased was, and fearing that she would fall, she took hold of one of the boards on the high pile next to her, when several boards fell from the top.

Seeing that they were coming down, she jumped out of the way, and called upon the diseased that she was to get out of the way. She ran into the house, and was met on the way by her Grandfather, who went and lifted up the boards, which had only been put there about an hour.

Samuel Cragg (Sen) deposed that the boards in question were placed in his yard the previous evening under his superintendence. They were put in against the wall at the lower end of the yard in two heaps each about seven feet high, they were secured for the night with wedges as he had to count them over the next morning.

The last witness and the diseased had not been out of the house above a minute before he heard some boards fall. He went out and met his Granddaughter, who said “ Oh ! Grand papa….. Annie was under the woods “ He found that about thirty boards have fallen from the front lot onto the diseased, who was literally covered by them, He noticed her hat only, with the assistance of his workmen he removed the boards, and found the diseased beneath, about twelve of them pressed on the back of her head, she was quite insensible, when he got her out, and bled from the mouth and nose.

He sent for Dr.Bolton at once, but she died with in five to ten minutes. He could not account for the boards falling. Dr.Bolton deposed to being called to see the diseased last night, about quarter to eight of the clock. She was lying on the sofa in Mr Cragg’s house, in a fatal collapse, accessioned by a dislocation of the neck. She breathed a few times and swallowed a little weakened brandy and water. Dr. Oliphant came in and concurred with his opinion.
He sent for Dr. Lankaster who came but she died ten minutes before he arrived.

They kept up artificial respiration for about an hour
Death was the result of a broken neck, the boards in falling had twisted it round.
A verdict of “ ACCIDENTAL DEATH “ was recorded …….

Seeing it was 1870 then you might still find them at the address given above..

Still not left the Wards!!
Welford Road has 4 of my Wards together but have a problem with 2 children being called Annie Elizabeth. The theory is Annie Elizabeth died 1870 and Elizabeth Annie was born 1872 but is reffered to as Annie Elizabeth on the census returns till she dies. However when Annie Elizabeth died June 1870 there was a coroner's report.

I'm sorry to hear the Quorn records are so diabolical, Mike, I was hoping to go back a bit further with my Quorn line one of these days.

Do you happen to have the following marriage on your discs? I have brief details from the online Quorn marriages, but I'm also interested in the witnesses and the spouses' marital statuses and parishes.

Thomas Parkinson, of Barrow-on-Soar, & Sarah Crofts, lic., 18 Jun 1764

I think I've found Thomas's baptism in Sawley, Derbyshire, where the Quorn Parkinsons seem to originate from, but I'm still looking for Sarah's. Unfortunately I don't know whether she was born in Quorn or Derbyshire. I know from her son's Non-conformist birth certificate that her father was called William, and there is a possible baptism for her in Derbyshire in 1746. I can't see anything in Leicestershire, but could you check if you have time?

Hi Mike

Many thanks for all your help. I agree with you, I think it is time to put the 'Greasley's' on hold for a while.

I admit, I have looked at a few other 'related' trees via this site and they all seem to have got stuck at 'the same time & place' - with William.

I really appreciate your help and now realise that it is a bit unlikely that I will find out who William was.............unless of course, I can trace it 'from the other end' so to speak. I still have a possible Drakelow connection - perhaps I can find out something from that end, - we will see. I do like playing detective!

Anyhow, most of m relations are indeed from Leicester, so I will take you up on the offer of future help at some point soon.

I did attempt to find out details of your last request yesterday…….

BUT…..Records for Quorndon held at the Records Office
Did not start until 1577……………

Those which I did see were……… DIABOLICAL. !!!!!!
Large black spots all over the text
Plus the font which they were written in
Look a lot like that of LATIN……
No year headings or to which events the text related to………
Baptisms Marriages or Burials.

The only way would be to get the original registers out of the strong room
But this would be very time consuming as your only allowed ONE register out at a time due to the fragile condition of the registers and then a 15~20 minute wait for the next one to arrive because you can not order the next one out till the first one is handed in…….
Sorry to sound a defeatist here but that is the polices of the Records Office
And I for one do not wish to go against that so as to spoil the good working relations
I have built up with them over the years because they do go the extra mile for me at times…

So…… having said that I think you’ll have to go along with the details which I posted 16/12/07.
These details came from my Leicestershire Family History Society Discs and Phillimores Discs The transcribers who did these would have had the original registers out in order to have recorded those details……..

I think for the time being…… You’ll have to put your “ Greasley Tree”
into the “ Pending Tray “ ……..
Remembering that information does get updated after a while. …….
I know that there are fellow members of the History Society busy typing up Parish events as I type this…….

So………. If I can help you with other Family names within Leicestershire area then please ask. ……..

If you get a moment when next visiting the records office, could you take a look at 'The Greasley's or Gresley's' for me please.

I am trying to find the ancestors (starting with the parents of:
Humphrey Greasley:
Christening: 25 DEC 1583 Quorndon, Leicester, England
Parents:
Father: William Greasley Family

Marriages:
Spouse: Dorothy Hynde Family
Marriage: 03 OCT 1602 Quorndon, Leicester, England

Cant find anything on the Quorndon marriage register prior to 1606 for a William Greasley. Cant find anything for William on any searches - anywhere.
Really would like to find out who William was as there are several 'theories' on other members trees about the possiblity of hiom being from the infamous 'Drakelow' Greasleys - but I suspect we will find that he was a 'local' guy.
