Find Ancestors

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help?

I recently purchased a birth certificate for my partner's g-g grandfather, Edward George Marshall.

His parents are noted down as Henry Marshall and Maria Belchamber, I am unable to locate a marriage for them unfortunately, so if anyone can that would be great.

From later Census when she was Maria Marshall I have her down as being born in a few different places around the Central London area, such as Bow and Notting Hill and just London on one of them, she was born approximately 1855.

I can't find her on any earlier Census so I'm not sure if she may have been a widow at the time of marriage to Henry Marshall and therefore Belchamber not being her maiden name. Basically I'm very stuck and can't find any existence of her on Census or a birth.

If anyone could help that would be great, I didn't think it would be hard with a surname like Belchamber but unfortunately it has been :(

Looks like the Maria Belchamber from the 1881 born in Middlesex, posted by Alviegal was possibly married to George Flexen who was also a member of the household.

The above is right on the 1901 Census, that is her.

Edward George Marshall 1892 in Windsor.

Maria Belchamber and Henry Marshall has their first child in Athlone, Ireland so probably married over there as no existence of a marriage cert in England/Wales.

Can't find anything on earlier Census.

Nothing for Maria Belchamber prior to her marriage though, nothing on 71, 61 Census that I can find.

Unusual name yet harder to find!

The Dartford Maria is definitely out as as she is still unmarried 1891 and working as a servant in Walton on Thames
There is a Maria Belchamber aged 15 in 1871 employed as a servant by the Brown family in Camberwell but she was born in Wales

Friend can account for all other Marias born around that time.

This family of Belchamber and later the Marshalls are a nightmare and keep changing their given name or surname. Sometimes the Marshalls were seen as AYLING eg Maria Hetty MARSHALL married as an AYLING in 1896. Her father was Henry a florist.

An Elizabeth LUMLEY married Moor Elwin Belchamber, a mariner on 11th February 1856 in Bethnal Green. His father is shown as James Belchamber, blacksmith.
Address for both of the couple is 4 Salisbury Place.
This is the same address where a Maria BELCHAMBER was born on 27 November 1854, with parents shown as William, a sailor and Elizabeth (nee Lumley)
No birth or death found for this William, so maybe Moor Elwin was using an easier name?

In 1861 they are in Hythe, Kent where Elwin, a coastguard died on 20 July 1861. Death registered as Edwin BELLCHAMBERS,but buried as Moor Edwin* (*this 2nd name not clear on PR)

Maria died of Asthma on 15 October 1903 in Windsor. Informant was her daughter Maria Hetty ELLIOTT( confirming MARSHALL / AYLING mix)

As Maria and Henry MARSHALL named a child Moorelvin, this gives weight to the 1861 census entry being the correct Maria.

Info taken from certificates, parish records and letters from a linked MARSHALL.
