Charles Wilson (born in 1836, New York) settled in Liverpool around 1850.
He was a merchant seaman.
Are there any of his relatives in the UK or does anyone know anything about his family in the USA?

According to a family tree this his father
1841 England Census

Not sure how accurate that info on the tree is, it would need some research to check the details

Thank you for the information I will try to do a bit of digging and see where it gets me, at least I have something to try. It has been a brick wall for so long.
James and his wife must have travelled to the states at some time in the eighteen twenties and thirty for charles to have been born there. I* will go back to Ellis Island records again.
I was at the who do you thing you are show in London the weekend and I had a free twenty minuete consultation with a geneoligist. After ten minuetes she said there is nothing I can help you with you have done everything I would do.Can do more in the comfort of my home. Thank you

Ellis Island records do not start until 1892
I think you might need to look at Castle Garden records
www.castlegarden.org/
from the Home page:-
"CastleGarden.org is an educational project of The Battery Conservancy. This free site offers access to an extraordinary database of information on 11 million immigrants from 1820 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. More than 100 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period."
It is a little difficult to work your way through, but you may find something.

Thanks Sylvia,
It is really interesting I found lots of James Wilson's but only knowing information regarding my immediate g.g.granfather limits what I can connect. I am sure the information is there if only I can just find something more regarding his immediate family. I have listed the site in my favourits.,

Regarding the information from that family tree linking james wilson in Bickerstaffe, appears he works at some stately home and no family is mentioned. I think he is single otherwise his family and children surely would be listed.
