Dear all,

I am looking for information on three brothers:

Magee, Arthur

* b. CAL 1843
o Sedgefield, County Durham

Magee, Francis

* b. CAL 1847
o Sedgefield, County Durham

Magee, John

* b. CAL 1852
o Wingate, County Durham

There were the sons of Arthur Magee, a hawker and his wife Mary. They were living at home ni 1851 and 1861 (Hutton Henry area of County Durham).

I am hoping someone can help me find out more about them as I currently don't have access to ancestry so I have put a post on here seeing if someone would take a look for me.

Kind regards,

Peter

Wouldn't it be best to keep this one & the one about their Sisters on one thread

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 30 Dec 2008 20:25

Oh no! There's another thread about the same family?

Peter

Peter Report 30 Dec 2008 20:31

Yes it is a good idea to keep two threads as one - sorry about that! I started one and decided to make another as I too am searching on the internet at the mo, and I have cross wires. Apologies for any confusion. Thank you also your help! This is great!

I have the 1851 for Arthur and his children - you found him in 1881 with his son Francis.

Thank you for the 1871 of Arthur and his wife - I have never seen this before!

1841 census for Stockton High Street in fabulous! I wonder who Patrick Magee was?! A brother of Arthur would seem the obvious suggestion.

I have Arthur Magee snr's marriage certificate and his father was Patrick Magee, a farmer!

I am looking on familysearch for 1881 but can't find him yet!

Thank you all again!

I am looking to see what became of two sisters.

Magee, Sarah

* b. CAL 1845
o Sedgefield, County Durham

Magee, Mary Ann

* b. CAL 1850
o Stokesley, Yorkshire

Their father was Arthur Magee, a hawker, and the family were living in Hutton Henry in 1851, 1861, although after this I can find no trace of the two girls. I would love to know what became of them!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Peter

A Jane Magee married either Ralph Stainsby or Thomas Welsh, June Q 1861, Stockton. (10a 73)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 31 Dec 2008 00:59

This looks like Mary Ann in 1871. It's transcribed Maggie but original is Maggee.
Back yard, Cross Keys Inn, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire
Robert Hewitson, head, 30, labourer, born Westmorland, Kaber?
Ellen, wife, 22, born Durham, Evenwood
***Mary Ann Maggee, visitor, 21, born Yorks, Stokesley

(Birth year and place match the 1851 census)

Hi,

thank you so much for all of your help! This is much appreciated and each bit of info all adds to the wider context.

I am going to post a thread looking for the Magee family who were living in Stockton High Street in 1841 - thank you so much for all of your help!

Jane Magee married Thomas Welch, and I can't find her after 1869 with her sons birth - Thomas remarried in 1874, but had deducted 10 years and described himself as a bachelor!

And, hoping 2009 is rich for us all!

Hi there ... thanks to a recent family discovery, it transpires that John Magee, born 1852 in Stokesley emmigrated abroad ... sadly, I don't know where or when. Can someone help please?

That would be much appreciated to see where he went.

Thanks,

Peter

Peter...Was he John Augustine...?

Is Stokesley.."Hutton Henry " area..?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Mar 2012 20:06

Peter, could you confirm the last census you have him on, and his occupation? Details of any wife and children, too. There are loads of John Magees emigrating so need to narrow it down.

Do you have a rough idea as to when this emigration is thought to have taken place?

Is it a different John Magee to the one born 1852 Wingate in your opening post?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Mar 2012 20:27

This is the 1871 for the family originally queried, but South Wingate is over 20 miles from Stokesley?

Peter

Peter Report 23 Mar 2012 14:18

Hi there,

The 1871 census shown above is John Magee, born c. 1852 ... the father, Arthur, was a travelling hawker before settling, so I assume 'South Wingate' is a mistake made at the time. Perhaps confusion when asked questions etc. This is definitley the same family.

Also, this is the last census I have John for; and I don't know of any wife or children which is what I am hoping to find out about.

Now, John Magee ... he did have a nephew named Hugh Augustine Magee, so maybe, Augustine was an unoffical middle name from RC confirmation?

Thank you again and further help is appreciated,

Best wishes,

Peter

If it is John A b. Hutton Henry then he is on the 1891/1901 Census for Easington.."McGee"

1901 Census Easington John A. Magee abt 1857 1901 Hutton Henry
1891 Census Easington John Augustine Magee [McGee] abt 1857 1891 Hutton Henry

Peter Report 23 Mar 2012 16:04

Hmmmmm not sure about John in court in 1873 - could be but nothing to say for definite. And I think the John Magee in 1891 and 1901 is a nephew of John Magee (b 1852).

Ok, John is proving difficult.
