You should buy his marriage certificate, that will tell you his father's name and occupation, and thus help you go further back. There are a number of James Allnes born in the relevant period in the London area.

The certiifcate will cost you £7 from www.gro.gov.uk ..... the ONLY way you can see the information is by buyinbg the certificate. Be sure to answer YES when they ask if you have the GRO reference number.

You can access the free 1881 Census on www.familysearch.org.

Hi Kim,

Your list does match to Sylvia's for 1881, making allowances for the ages being a year or two different - whilst people did not always report ages accurately, the combination of children's forenames in a particular order in a family is usually a dead give-away:

leonard allen born 1885 (won't be on 1881)
annie 16 (not on 1881 - perhaps with a relative?)
charles 15 (aged 6 in 1881)
florence 1 (won't be on 1881)
frederick 12 (aged 0 in 1881)
george 20 (aged 10 in 1881)

[edit: the matches extend further than this - the parent's names and places of birth are the same, as are the father's occupation, and the places of birth of the children still at home in 1891]

Have a look for Annie in 1881, and you may even get info on the extended family ....

Gosh,

I am glad I "ignored" and put up the 1881 census ..... otherwise Kim would not have believed we had the correct family!!
