I'm trying to find out more about a James Hughes and Sophia who had a son James Reginald Hughes was born c. 1849 in "England" (as recorded on various Scottish census records). James Hughes junior moved to Edinburgh, but my understanding was that the family originally came from south Wales. On both the marriage and death certificates of James Hughes junior his father's profession is recorded as "Captain Royal Navy". I have doubts about the truth of this though. I haven't had any luck tracking down Sophia and James at all...any help will be appreciated. |

Sorry - missed out Sophia's surname - it was listed as Barry and Barrie on her son's marriage and death certificates. Suspect Barry may be correct and Barrie a Scottishification |

Dee - thanks for the suggestion. I ordered up that birth certificate a while back - the father is listed as James Hughes but the mother is listed as Margaret Hughes (nee Hughes). Occupation of father listed as Master Builder. |

There's this one, but Sophia is formerly a Weaver's wife (now widow) |

There's a few with mothers called Sophia, but nobody with an RN connection. Also looked for marriages but none to a Barry or Barrie. She could have been previously married though. |

Doesn't look like the last suggestion is correct - in 1851 the father of that family is listed as Stephen. |
