Does anyone have any suggestions for other avenues I might try to find out more about James HUghes snr and Sophia Barry?

2nd Marriage
Following Barabara Pearson's death in 1892 James Reginald Hughes married Catherine Bryce on 1st October 1895 in Edinburgh. He is listed as aged 46, she is 21.

The information on James's parents is the same as his other marriage and death certs. James Hughes Captain RN, Sophia Barry. Both deceased.

Tracey - no there are no Hope connections in my family. I haven't found James in the 1881 census anywhere

Catherine Bryce was James Reginald Hughes's second wife. I'll post details of their marriage later if that might help.

My understanding is that James Reginald Hughes was a bit of a "wide boy" so may have made the Royal Navy Captain part up himself or exaggerated - as I mentioned earlier there was a story from my great aunt of someone coming to Scotland on a coal boat of some sort - no idea if that would have been James Reginald or his father. Suspect James Reginald.

Incidentaly, my connection to these people is that James Reginald Hughes's second son William Lamond was my great grandfather.

Sometimes it's actually easier to work from seeing something.

Doesn't look like the last suggestion is correct - in 1851 the father of that family is listed as Stephen.

I will check that lead out - don't see any reason why it couldn't be. The first I know of James Reginald for sure is that he was married in Edinburgh in 1884 aged 35. By this time both parents are noted as deceased. James junior's job is Stationer Master. I haven't found him in Scotland before then.

I have a childhood memory of a great aunt mentioning someone coming from Wales to Scotland on some sort of coal boat.

There's a few with mothers called Sophia, but nobody with an RN connection. Also looked for marriages but none to a Barry or Barrie. She could have been previously married though.

There's this one, but Sophia is formerly a Weaver's wife (now widow)

Don't think that can be my James and Sophia though. James junior was born +/- 1850. I suppose that James senior and Sophia would have been born before 1835 and would probably be at least in their 50s by the 1881 census.

Dee - thanks for the suggestion. I ordered up that birth certificate a while back - the father is listed as James Hughes but the mother is listed as Margaret Hughes (nee Hughes). Occupation of father listed as Master Builder.

So birth date, father's name and child's name seem to match as well as "England"/proximity to Wales/maritime connections but not mother's name or father's occupation.

Would seem odd for mother's name to be wrong??

Sorry should have mentioned this possible lead - I had discounted it but haven't found anything more likely...
