Forgive me if I'm being thick, but is Conguless the name?

I would have suspected a typo, but you wrote it twice.

Checked at FreeBMD using

Jones
Cong*

and it seems to be CONGELLUS, for info.

There are a dozen or so births, marriages & deaths 1843-1926 (so far) in the Liverpool and then Prescot areas.

EvieBeavie Report 3 Apr 2009 21:40

Interesting. Searching at FreeBMD for given name

Congel*

the only entries that turn up are the Jones-s. And Congellus doesn't appear as a surname.

The oldest entries in the IGI for the name Congellus Jones are:

CONGELLUS JONES married Ann Rhead
20 DEC 1802 Stoke Upon Trent, Stafford, England

CONGELLUS JONES married Mary Bratt
21 NOV 1814 Norton In The Moors, Stafford, England

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 3 Apr 2009 21:43

Aha, there is one other entry in the IGI for given name Congellus:

CONGELLUS CARNEL
Birth: 25 AUG 1814
Christening: 30 AUG 1814 Saint Peter And Saint Paul-Rc, Newport, Shropshire, England
Father: GULIELMI CARNEL
> Mother: ANNAE JONES
Batch No.: P016251

-- so he obviously got it from his Jones side!

Congellus was a 7th century Irish Monk.

Or 6th century. ;)

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/gwenynen.gwent/music-notes.htm

The university of Bangor-Is-Coed, founded by Lucius king of Britain, was remarkable for its valuable library. It continued 350 years, and produced many learned men.
>> Congellus, a holy man, who died A.D. 530, changed the university into a monastery, containing 2100 monks.
At the instigation of Austin the Monk, Ethelfred, king of Northumberland, massacred twelve hundred of the British clergy of this monastery: nine hundred, who escaped, were afterwards slain by pirates. This happened in the year 603.

Just google the name and you'll find more!

Thank you for all your replies , Sorry the correct spelling is Congellus his d.o.b. c1815 married 1st to Sarah Wright then to her sister Martha with whom he had 7 children , one of who married my gr.aunt Mary Moore in Scotland then moved back to liverpool after 1901. Just wondered if any members recognized the unusual name Congellus jones who was born in Staffordshire.

Jean

Thank you Evie Bevie I have all the census's until 1901 for Congulles's son Alfred and his family.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 3 Apr 2009 21:59

It seems to be more than unusual, that name, Jean -- it seems to be flat out unique!

I wonder how many years the Jones family had carried it, down to the 1900s, and what their connection with the 6th (or 7th) century monk was.

Quite fascinating!

Edit - yes, Jean, I realized you would have the censuses - but anyone reading might not have, so we often add these things "for ref".

Google doesn't find much.

Declaration that the fine levied on the property shall be limited as above.
> Witnesses:- Thomas Key, Congellus Jones, John Comberbatch, Relec Shropshire.

Again, presumably the one married to Ann Rhead.

Forgive me again, I know you're looking for people related to them, but the Congellus Jones-s are just an interesting artefact!

I have a surname in my tree that is now extinct in England, and you seem to have a given name that has gone the same way.

The last record I see of the name:

Name: Arthur Congellus Jones
Birth Date: 18 Sep 1927
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 1991
Age at death (estimated): 63
Registration district: Warrington
Inferred County: Cheshire, Lancashire
Volume: 35
Page: 1305

although it is possible that it is still being handed on as a middle name and so wouldn't show up in the GRO index.

Well not quite though, Jean -- "As far as I can make out Evie Beavie it only went as far as Congellus b 1814 1st son d.o.b.1857."

There is the record of Congellus Jones who married 1802 in Staffordshire, who is likely the father of Congellus b 1814, and is likely the one in that record at the Archives.

I would be very surprised if it didn't go back way further than that! How to know? Search me!

Btw, it seems that Congellus is a Latinization of the name Comgall (various spellings), and itself might be spelt Comgallus, Comogellus ...
