Christopher Report 30 Jun 2008 22:31

My name is Christopher McDonald-Martin and I am looking for any relatives of John McDonald who was a shoe maker at 22 Chapel Street, Inverness in 1860/61 who was married to Mary (Maiden name Barron) they had Son's by the name of William and Hugh and Daughter's Catherine and Christina. In 1893 William married Jane Ann (Maiden name Grant) in Nairn. Jane's Father was Donald Grant her Mother was Jemima McDonald they married on the 13th June 1862 in Beauly, Inverness. Jane had a Son born on the 10th August 1894 his name was John Hugh McDonald his Father William McDonald was a railway engineer at that time, sadly Jane died on the 15th September 1894 aged 29 years at Surbiton House, Fairfield Lane, Inverness when my Father, John was only 6 weeks old apparently my Father was brought up by Aunts I am not sure on what side of the family. We know from Jane 's marriage certificate that there was a Tina Grant and Hugh Macdonald who witnessed the wedding on 20th April 1893 at the Royal Hotel, Nairn.
We also have records that Catherine Duff McDonald, Daughter of John and Mary married on the 18th July 1879 in Greyfriars, Dumfries to William Brown, Son of Thomas Brown and Ann (Maiden name Muir) William and Catherine had a Daughter Mary Barron McDonald Brown born on the 18th July 1881 at 49 St Georges Road, Glasgow. From the census we have William Brown aged 48 years in 1901 living with Hugh, Mary, Annie and a nephew John Hugh McDonald aged 6 years living at 7 Steven Street, Glasgow. I have been informed that my Father John Hugh McDonald apparently joined the army in 1914 at the age of 18 years and was deployed in the Middle East and at one stage took a roll as acting captain. We know there was a cousin Alex and in 1919 my Father John Hugh McDonald gave his address as Invernevis, Fort William. During the war John befriended a Lt Col. H.P. Sykes who was the son of Jessie living at Invernevis aged over 90 in 1918, Mr Sykes left Scotland for South Africa, other people associated with my Father in 1919, which we think my be relatives are M.M. McDonald, H. McDonald, M. McDonald and A. W. McDonald who we know is the Grandfather of Rory Macdonald. Apparently another good friend of my Father was Mr James Gunn, of which I have no further information.
My Grandfather William McDonald worked in the John Brown Shipyard on the Clyde, he was the chief engineer on the sea trials of the Queen Mary in 1932 aged 71 years. He died in Thornhill, Dumfries on the 2nd March 1947 and is buried in Mouswald Cemetery. We know from a local farmer Mr John Gas that 2 young ladies from Glasgow attended his funeral. If there is anyone who can help us further with filling in the gaps for example the regiment of John Hugh McDonald, place of education and occupation from 1901 to 1938 when he arrived in Southampton and married my Mother Ethel Louise (Maiden name Woollard) on the 11th September 1943 aged 49 years, my Father died on the 19th November 1952 aged 58 years. My Father was apparently a golfer at St Andrews and a prolific painter.
If anyone has any information it would be very much appreciated.
