what a horrid death for Sarah :-(

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 01:01

Well, I have found two newspaper articles relating to Robert Burroughs death.

The first was in the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser dated 2nd May 1913.

In this report, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and the Coroner said that speed was a factor.

The other Report was in the Nottingham Evening Post dated Ist May 1913

Although not as long a report as the first, this gave a few more details. They got his age wrong, though, reporting him as being 41

"Mr Robert Burroughs, 41, Licenced Victualler, of Rusholme Manchester, died in Lancaster Infirmary yesterday from injuries received in a motor car accident near Hazel Grove, Yealand.

The deceased was proceeding to Grange-over-Sands in a car, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Thomas Borwick, his nephew and niece. In negotiating a curve the car skidded and was overturned. Mr Burroughs was jammed underneath and sustained fatal injuries to his head and ribs. The other occupants were bruised and shaken"

The article was headed "Pinned Under Motor Car"

Absolutely, Sylvia :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Nov 2014 01:15

could have been one of the first speeding car accidents :-)

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 01:28

When I read the report, I thought to myself "Nothing changes" except, possibly, the speeds involved!

I would love to know what type of car he was driving

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Nov 2014 01:34

that would be interesting!

Sylvia, a big ask I know :-)

Could you possibly do a search on Ancestry to see if Robert Burroughs (Borroughs) had a Will, or whether Probate was granted?

We have his address in Manchester, and date of death in Lancaster.

Wills and Probate are areas not well covered by FMP after about 1858.

Many thanks :-)

Wow!

Just done a search on the Manchester Council (UK) Burials on line site and found this:

Hi

back after dinner ..................

I'll do the look ups for you now :-)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Nov 2014 03:36

:-D

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 about Robert Borroughs

Name: Robert Borroughs
Probate Date: 24 Jun 1913
Death Date: 30 Apr 1913
Death Place: Manchester, England
Registry: London, England

from image:-

Borroughs, Robert, of 492 Claremont Road, Rusholme, Manchester, died 30 April 1913 at Lancaster Infirmary, Lancaster. Probate London 24 June to Ewdin Borroughs, Butcher, and John Thomas Leadbetter, Pawnbroker.
Effects £4410 8s 10d
Resworn £6710 8s 10d

It DOES say Ewdin .................. but may be a mis-spelling for Edwin?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Nov 2014 03:48

Edwin Borroughs, Butcher, seems to be the son of Thomas Borroughs ...................... is Thomas a brother of Robert?

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 03:53

Many thanks, Sylvia :-D

Edwin Borroughs was one of the witnesses at Robert's Marriage.

Brother/ Best Man?

I'm trying, at the moment, to find out where Joseph Mortimer was buried.

As he died after his wife, Jane, I assumed that they would be buried together :-S

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 04:16

Found Joseph, he was cremated.

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 05:05

Aha!

I have also found Evelyn's, not Eveline as recorded on the Cemetery Site, death aged 0.

That would account for Sarah Ann's condition :-(

Allan

Allan Report 20 Nov 2014 23:13

Sylvia, my apologies!

I never answered your earlier question re Edwin Borroughs and Thomas Borroughs.

Thomas Borroughs was Robert's father and I'm assuming that Edwin was Robert's brother.

Now, pushing the friendship further :-0 would you possibly be kind enough to see if Joseph and Jane Mortimer left any wills etc.

Jane Mortimer died 10th December 1892, at 43 Monmouth Street Rusholme Manchester

Joseph Mortimer died January 1986, at the Union Workhouse, Withington Manchester

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Nov 2014 03:43

Hi

you may ask me to look up anything, and I'll see if I can find it ................... you're certainly not pushing the bounds of friendship too far :-)

There is no sign of either Jane or Joseph leaving a will :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Nov 2014 03:52

Many thanks, Sylvia, for both lots of information :-D

I should have mentioned that Thomas Borroughs was Robert's father as he is down on Robert's Marriage Certificate as such :-)

My apologies for the oversight.

Just one of my 'observations': I wonder why Joseph was cremated when Jane Mortimer (his wife) and Evelyn Jane Borroughs (his grand-daughter) were buried, albeit in the Borroughs/Burroughs family grave :-S

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Nov 2014 04:43

You're very welcome

Interesting point ......... I don't think cremation was as common then as it is now

Allan

Allan Report 21 Nov 2014 04:52

I should also have added that Joseph's daughter, Sarah Ann Borroughs was buried there in 1895, the year before Joseph's death.

I'll do a search on Manchester Crematorium, which, from memory, was the first one established
