Claire, did you have any success looking for Robert in the 1851 on ancestry. I could not find him at all there.

Myra, as Claire says Robert could have been married twice. You might have some fun looking for the marriage on Freebmd. As it says it is free to view and the satisfaction you get when you find something yourself is great.

Hi Angela,
I'm notsure if the 1861 census are the same people. I'm pretty sure he was born in Portsea and not Swanage.

I am so sorry about the delay in answering you all. You must think me very rude. I keep getting disconnected.
You have all been so kind and helpful and have given me alot of info to digest.
I can't thankyou all enough.

Myra, one of the things I have learned from doing all the research I have is that the information as to birth place on the census is very dubious. I have records which I know are my g grandfather which have him born in at least 3 places.

I try to look at the age of the children, the occupations & the wife's details as well as the place of birth

Small blonde Angel

Me to Claire and if they match I tend to think that the wrong place was written in the census. I have been down many a blind alley trusting birth places on the census.

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 6 May 2008 12:34

Myra - I'm typing out the details of the 1871 census, so you can see that it matches quite well with the 1861.

1871 census

Rosanna Haysome - wife - mar - 60 - wife of stone quarrier - Langton, Dorset
Thomas Haysome - son - 17 - Swanage, Dorset
Charles Haysome - son - 14 - scholar - Gosport, Hants.

So it looks like father, Robert is still alive

Myra

Myra Report 6 May 2008 13:05

I don't think the 2 Roberts on the 1861 & 1841 census are the same person as on the 1861 his dob is 1799 and on the 1841 census his dob is 1806.
What do you think.
Myra

Small blonde Angel

Small blonde Angel Report 6 May 2008 13:17

Myra and that can happen too. If you see the two Vine postings I have put up for you which are clearly the same family the Walter is 37 in 1861 and 44 in 1871. People lied about their ages all the time in the census.

Christina did you look for Robert in that census? If not I will have a go at it.
