Charles from the 1861 census, possible son of Hannah. It seems very likely that that is your Hannah b 1823 Thrintoft as Charles has also moved to Stranton. Possibly Hannah followed him.

Think this is him in 1851 which does not help with his supposed father 'Anthony' a plumber.

Marian Report 17 Sep 2021 16:47

Alvie and Argyll, thank you so very much for the above, I thought I had come to a dead end with this post. I now know the relationship with Florence and "Hannah". I had investigated the Thrintoft Bowmans and have quite a bit of info on them but couldn't really find the connection. I think Charles Armitage Bowmont's name is possibly a fib because he starts out as Bowman and I do think Hannah may have followed him to Hartlepool. Charles' wife Annie (Race) was a very strange woman. She had four children which were acknowledged. One illegitimate child which she farmed out on a family as a nurse child and another child Catherine (I do have another thread on Catherine, a very long one) who was never mentioned. I am now going to take my time and take in the above. Once again, thank you both.

Hello, I've just downloaded Hannah's death certificate, it says widow of John Bowmont, house joiner journeyman. The informant was Florence McSloy, granddaughter, present at the death. Died of cardiac debility/old age debility.
I've also found Ada and Phoebe's marriages and 1901/1911 census returns, but will have to get marriage certs for positive confirmation. Onward and upward.

"Widow of John Bowmont"?

Caroline's marriage cert says her father's name was Thomas.

It seems Hannah wasn't actually married and Caroline invented a father's name when she married .
There 's no father named on Caroline's baptism record posted earlier.

Caroline's birth, illegitimate (don't think already posted):

BOWMAN, CAROLINE -
GRO Reference: 1856 M Quarter in NORTHALLERTON Volume 09D Page 423

Brother Charles ?? 1861 census says Charles was born in Thirsk RD.

Marian Report 18 Sep 2021 11:09

Hello, yes I've come to the conclusion that Charles and Caroline were illegitimate and I don't thank Hannah was ever married. With John Bowden being a sailor/connected to shipping, maybe he and Caroline were at sea on all following census returns. Although on Florence marriage certificate it says John was deceased. I think a lot of fibbing has been going on over the years.
Best wishes Marian

Marian Report 18 Sep 2021 20:00

Hello, Mary Turner nee Bowman is Caroline's cousin. Mary is the daughter of Robert Bowman (Hannah's brother) and Eleanor (Ellen) Gregory. Mary was born August 1844 and Ellen was buried December 1844. Robert remarried and Mary went to live with her grandmother Hannah and Uncle Joseph. After Mary's husband died, Mary went to have quite a few illegitimate children. In 1851 Hannah was living with her sister at Thirsk where Charles was born.
As an aside re John Bowden, there is a YouTube video of the Trincomalee at the RN Museum of Hartlepool which takes you aboard the ship where it is now based.
Best wishes
