Michael Report 2 Oct 2008 12:21

I have a marriage cert. for William Michael Canny and Rebecca Bowers Blake who married at St. Barnabas Church, parish of St. Luke, Middlesex on 16th July 1871. The bride was a minor and her father was Thomas Bowers Blake. I can find no record of Rebecca's birth or the birth and marriage of Thomas; any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Canny

Have you found William and Rebecca on the 1881 census?

There's a tree on Ancestry that has Rebecca Bowers Blake married first to Michael or W. Canny, 2 children from that marriage. He died 1880. She then married John W. Doherty and had 4 more children.

Ancestry trees. Hmm. To be taken with a rock of salt. There's no Doherty-Canny marriage in the GRO.

I can't see the 1901 at the moment, my sub having expired, but is that Phyllis a daughter-in-law, and the young William (and maybe one or both of the other young children) her child?

Not really relevant, I was just wondering whether it was she who married a Doherty. ;)

This is how the 1901 census reads, Janey.
244 Whitehorse Rd., Croydon, Surrey
Rebecca Canny, head, widow, 47
Phyllis, dau, married, 22 (this doesn't make sense, why would she be Canny if she was married?)
Alice, dau, 4 (whose daughter Rebecca or Phyllis?)
William, son, 2
John Doherty, vistor, 17
Reginald Canny, brother, 10 (Not brother of Rebecca, surely? But relationships are supposed to be related to head.)
James Canny, brother, 6

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Oct 2008 18:12

I'd go with the relationships being to Phyllis.

Two kids were her children, and two were her brothers. And Phyllis was daughter-in-law. And the enumerator was getting paid by the name and didn't care. ;)

I agree, fellow Canuck.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Oct 2008 18:47

And quite possibly Alice should have been recorded as Doherty, but the enumerator *really* didn't care!

Except it does seem she didn't actually marry him. ;)

"And quite possibly Alice should have been recorded as Doherty"

Aargh, I meant Rebecca, in 1901, not Alice.

But who's this Alice living with John Doherty and the pseudo-Doherty Canny boys in 1891??

edit to note -- aha, both Canny boys have third initial "D", i.e. father's surname was given as a middle name (very common).

Thanks to all who replied, especially Margaret Manson, Barbara and JaneyCanuck. I'm sure the links you have suggested are the right ones, and will follow them up. And JaneyCanuck, your comments at 18.12 p.m. were spot on - Phyllis (my grandmother) was Rebecca's daughter in law and the rest of that census entry is very dodgy!

Hi guys....3 years later !!....Alice Louise Canny was my grandmother. In the 1901 census her mother Phyllis was living with her mother in law Rebecca with her 2 children Alice and William. My problem is where is Rebecca's son, Phyllis's husband William Ernest Canny ?

By 1911 Phyllis and William are together with their children at 10 Boyton Road Edmonton.. just to make things interesting they have a son Reginald and a son James.....named after their uncles listed in 1901 ??

Hi Lisa, if you want to reach Michael you should click on his name and try to contact him by private message. Over two years later, he may not be looking for replies.

So your question is about this person in the 1891 census:

53 Lowfield Rd., St. John, Hampstead, London
John W. Doherty, head, 40, commercial traveller
Alice, wife, 35
John W., son, 7
Reginald A., son, 10 months
> William E. Canny, visitor, 16, oilman's assistant
All born London except Alice born Harrow

him being Alice's sister? Do you mean, where is he after 1891?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Apr 2011 21:51

Did you search for his marriage at FreeBMD?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

There are only two entries for that name -- birth in 1874 and marriage in 1897.

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Apr 2011 21:54

I see where we are. Phyllis in 1901 was William's wife -- nobody ever came out and said so.

Marriages Mar 1897
Brown Phyllis Caroline Hendon 3a 246
CANNY William Ernest Hendon 3a 246

So where is William in 1901, is the question?

Here he is in 1911:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

CANNY WILLIAM ERNEST 1875 36 Edmonton Middlesex
CANNY PHYLISS CAROLINE 1879 32
CANNY ALICE LOUISE 1897 14
CANNY WILLIAM MICHAEL 1899 12
CANNY VICTORIA NORA 1902 9
CANNY REGINALD ARTHUR 1906 5
CANNY JAMES HENRY 1910 1

He wasn't in the one obvious place, the Anglo-Boer War, at least not as a member of the Imperial Yeomanry:
