I am looking for the MARRIAGE(S) of my grandfather, John Alfred JONES, born in 1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent. He was my grandfather. He was married twice, the second time, being to my grandmother.

I am looking for the marriage with his first wife, which I expect was prior to 1895, as their first daughter Daisy was born in 1895. Daisy was followed by Lilian Lucy in 1897 and then Rose E. in 1898. I would think the marriage would have been in London, where I believe he was living at the time.

I am also looking for the marriage between my grandfather and his second wife, my grandmother Emily LINES. My grandmother was born in St. Albans in 1875 and on the 1901 census, she is married to John Jones and living in London. It shows that they have the three daughters, Daisy, Lilian and Rose from his first marriage, living with them. Their first son, John, was born in 1901.

I would dearly love to find both of these marriages of John Jones, but have looked and looked....I desperately don't want to give up !

With your expertise, can anyone help me, please ?????

To find the name of his first wife you may need to buy one of her childrens birth certificates.

The fact that Emily is recorded as being John's 'wife' in 1901 doesn't actually prove that they were married..........

Hello Nicki,

The reference you have for a marriage at St. Saviours could be a possibility for my grandmother Emily Lines. Where would I find it ?

As for Daisy, Lilian and Rose, I believe they were born in Wandsworth and Peckham (London).

Thank you all for trying for me.....I've searched and searched for these marriages on free bmd (may I add I am a novice at genealogy), so that is why I am looking for help from people with so much more experience than me.

Hi Samspade,

Gertrude Lines was my grandma Emily's sister and she lived with them for a while.

Grace Lines was my grandma's illegitimate daughter that she had before she married my grandfather, John Alfred Jones.

londonlady Report 20 Oct 2008 15:59

Cristine....no, I don't think that's my grandparent's wedding in Greenwich. I don't think they ever lived in that part of London.

I agree Ericthered, the census is no proof that were actually married. It's just that I can't find either of his two marriages....I was hoping that he did in fact marry.

Potty

Potty Report 20 Oct 2008 15:59

I don't think that 1898 marriage is your grandmother's - there is no John Jones on the full index for that quarter who married St Saviour.

londonlady

londonlady Report 20 Oct 2008 16:07

Thank you so much Potty. Sad, because I was quite hopeful for the St. Saviours marriage.

St Saviours, Surrey as was in those days, is now called Southwark Cathedral located at London Bridge and that's where my parents got married (youngest child of Emily and John Jones).

I know that John and Emily lived around that area for some time too, so it would have been such a good possibility that their marriage happened there.
