I think you definitely need to order one of the children's birth certificates to confirm her maiden name because it looks very likely that his mother was Mary Ridyard.

unfortunately Bate is a popular name in Lowton and there are several births which could be children of Richard between 1908 & 1911 before mmn was added to the indices.

A mistake many of us make. Don't assume that a child's middle name is mother's maiden name! T'aint necessarily so.
